Position: Utilities Maintenance Specialist – Location: Bridgwater, Somerset
Salary: £47,614
Shift Schedule: 24/7 shift rotation with an 18-day break: 2 days, 2 nights followed by 4 days off, repeated for 7 cycles, then an 18-day break that includes your annual leave.
Role Overview
Reporting to the Utilities and Operational Engineering Manager, the Utilities Engineer position is diverse and demands strong decision-making abilities, a proactive mindset, and the capacity to make critical business decisions. The utilities team is responsible for managing the effluent treatment plant, steam generation systems, compressed air setups, and more.
Key Responsibilities as a Utilities Maintenance Specialist at Refresco
- Maintain utility service levels to meet production demands.
- Uphold departmental standards at the highest level.
- Support budget management through effective maintenance and spare parts oversight.
- Identify opportunities for energy conservation and projects aimed at reducing asset downtime.
- Actively contribute to the implementation of GPTW initiatives.
- Ensure compliance with Health & Safety regulations and statutory requirements for all assets within the Utilities Department.
- Conduct ongoing site assessments to ensure environmental compliance.
- Perform planned preventive maintenance (PPM) and corrective actions.
- Maintain hygiene and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) standards within the utilities department and designated areas.
- Oversee contractor management on a daily basis.
- Respond to crisis situations through extended coverage, call-ins, and remote monitoring.
In addition to daily tasks, there will be development objectives, including:
- Becoming the first point of contact for all Site Utilities.
- Steam and condensate systems management.
- High/Low Pressure Compressed Air systems.
- Water treatment and distribution systems.
- Effluent treatment and disposal management.
- Chemical dosing and delivery systems oversight.
- Cooling Tower and Legionella Control Systems management.
- Building Management Systems operation.
- Canteen and employee welfare facilities maintenance.
- Air Handling and fixed cooling equipment management.
- Roller, Rapid, Fire, and Pedestrian Doors maintenance.
- Fire suppression and detection systems oversight.
Training and Development Opportunities for the Right Candidate:
- BOAS – Boiler Operation Accreditation Scheme.

Candidate Profile:
We are seeking a Maintenance Engineer with NVQ Level 3 or higher qualifications to work across various departments and shifts, developing the necessary skills for this dynamic role.
As a qualified maintenance engineer, you should possess hands-on experience in performing basic maintenance tasks and demonstrate a solid foundational understanding of engineering principles. A positive attitude and a commitment to delivering the required service levels are essential for success in this position.
