Job Overview:
As a Process Safety Scientist, you will play a critical role in ensuring the safety of chemical processes intended for API manufacture, from laboratory to commercial scales. You will work collaboratively with cross-functional teams to apply process safety workflows, design and execute laboratory experiments, and interpret results to ensure safe scale-up and implementation of mitigation measures.
Key Responsibilities:
- Apply process safety principles and workflows to ensure safe laboratory scale-up and scale-up into pilot plant facilities.
- Design, execute, and interpret complex laboratory experiments to assess the safety of starting materials, intermediates, reagents, waste streams, and chemical reactions.
- Develop clear, concise recommendations based on process safety testing results in detailed reports and oral presentations.
- Lead/contribute to the evaluation of novel technologies and techniques to maintain world-class process safety testing capabilities.
- Maintain laboratory operations, ensuring equipment is properly maintained and optimized to minimize downtime.
- Identify initiatives to enhance process safety workflows and technology to improve process safety testing efficiency.
- Collaborate with stakeholders to forecast resource needs to ensure customer requirements are met.
- Provide expert opinion and alternative insights on data interpretation to ensure effective assessment of chemical reaction hazards.
- Work with external testing houses to identify and coordinate safety testing, fostering effective relationships.
- Deliver process safety testing training to new starters and develop new training materials as the process safety function evolves.
Requirements:
- BS/MS in chemistry or chemical engineering with a minimum 5 years of experience in small molecule development.
- Awareness and expertise in process safety testing and inherently safer process design.
- Hands-on experience operating and data interpretation from state-of-the-art process safety testing equipment, including Differential Scanning Calorimetry, Thermal Screening Unit, Accelerating Rate Calorimetry, and Mettler Toledo RC1.
- Experience in writing process safety testing documents to support safe scale-up and tech transfer.
- Proven track record in mentoring junior colleagues.
- Ability to perform complex tasks, including data handling and mathematical calculations.
