London, Greater London, United Kingdom MI5 - The Security Service Full time

Job Overview

About Us

MI5 is dedicated to protecting the nation from significant threats such as terrorism and hostile state actions aimed at the UK, its citizens, and its way of life. We conduct thorough investigations by gathering, analyzing, and evaluating intelligence, collaborating with various partners, including MI6 and GCHQ, to mitigate these threats. Working at MI5 offers a unique opportunity to engage in challenging tasks within a supportive environment, contributing meaningfully to the national security of the UK.

Position Details

The Role

As a Cybersecurity Research Specialist, you will be instrumental in developing capabilities to gather cyber intelligence from critical computers and devices essential to MI5's mission of safeguarding the UK.

Joining our Cyber Collections team, you will enhance our intelligence investigations and address serious national security threats. Your focus will be on a specific technology domain, ensuring that we can continue our vital work in the face of emerging threats. You will also be responsible for researching and innovating new advanced techniques to bolster our unique capabilities. This will involve gaining an in-depth understanding of the various applications and operating systems utilized by the subjects of our intelligence operations.

Your daily tasks may include identifying new vulnerabilities within target operating systems and applications, developing exploits for vulnerabilities discovered within the community, researching innovative methods to evade detection, or assisting in the enhancement of our on-device collection capabilities. Continuous development is a key aspect of this role, and we highly value ongoing learning.

Candidate Profile

About You

You will possess a robust background in security research or reverse engineering, along with extensive knowledge of the internals of a specific operating system (Windows, Linux, Android, iOS, or MacOS). You thrive in a collaborative team environment, excel at problem-solving, and are comfortable navigating uncertainty and risk.

A solid understanding of networking principles is essential, as is familiarity with how devices communicate over the Internet (TCP/IP, etc.). As a skilled independent programmer, you are proficient in low-level systems programming languages (C/C++, Rust, etc.) as well as higher-level application languages (Python, Java, etc.). You should also be knowledgeable about various vulnerability classes, including memory and logic vulnerabilities, and common exploitation techniques relevant to specific operating systems or architectures.

Training and Development

We place great importance on the ongoing learning and development of our security research professionals as part of our mission.

We are committed to investing in your skills and providing access to a variety of internal and external training courses that support your continuous development. We encourage you to broaden your understanding of technologies beyond your immediate focus, as a diverse skill set is essential across multiple areas. Opportunities to attend external workshops and conferences, including those with our international partners, will also be available to support your training and development.

Compensation and Benefits

The starting salary for this position is £48,928. This role qualifies for a specialist capability-based pay structure that acknowledges and rewards expertise in cyber technical specialties. Based on our assessment of your skills and experience during the interview process, you may be eligible for additional skills payment, potentially raising your salary to between £57,362 and £61,732.

To maintain the higher salary, you will need to demonstrate and validate your skills according to our Cyber Technical Framework within your first year of employment. If you are unable to provide evidence of the required skills, you will receive support to achieve this. Failure to meet these requirements by the end of your first year may result in a salary adjustment to a lower level within the specified range.

As you grow and enhance your technical skills, you will have the opportunity to progress through additional pay points at this grade. You can apply for recognition of your skills reaching a higher level at regular intervals, as determined by you and your line manager.

Additional benefits include:

  • 25 Days Annual Leave, increasing to 30 days after 5 years of service, plus additional public and privilege holidays
  • Opportunities for recognition through our employee performance scheme
  • Personal Learning Budget
  • Interest-free season ticket loan
  • Excellent pension scheme
  • Cycle to work scheme
  • Facilities such as a gym, restaurant, and on-site coffee bars (at select locations)
  • Paid parental and adoption leave
