About the Role

We are seeking a highly motivated and organized Biomedical Science Assistant to join our team at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. As a Biomedical Science Assistant, you will play a vital role in supporting our laboratory services, ensuring the highest standards of quality and patient care.

Key Responsibilities
  • Deliver scientific and technical procedures under the direction of a responsible healthcare scientist practitioner.
  • Perform a range of healthcare science and scientific activities under indirect supervision or direction.
  • Pre-analytical processing of samples, including receipt, preparation, and processing.
  • Store, retrieve, and dispose of biological material according to relevant procedures.
  • Deal with direct queries from medical staff, nursing staff, and other service users, including telephone enquiries and taking appropriate action.
  • Assist in maintaining high scientific and technical standards.
  • Promote and maintain a high standard of relevant education and training.
  • Adhere to all trust and departmental policies, maintaining clinical records in relation to activities carried out and inputting or interrogating test results.
  • May be required to supervise, organize, and allocate work, or train less experienced staff in own area.

Requirements
  • GCSEs in Maths and English at level C/4 or above, or equivalent qualification/experience.
  • Level 3 qualification, NVQ, 2 A-Levels, Apprenticeship, or IBMS Certificate of Achievement (Part I) plus significant laboratory experience or extensive laboratory experience in the relevant discipline.
  • Ability to follow and work to Standard Operating Procedures and Policy.
  • Desirable: experience with a range of laboratory techniques, NHS laboratory experience, keyboard and basic IT skills, awareness of Health & Safety issues, effective communication skills, written and oral, ability to plan and prioritize allocated work.
