Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced and dynamic Occupational Therapist to lead and develop our Major Trauma Occupational Therapy team. As a senior clinician, you will work closely with the multidisciplinary team to provide high-quality therapeutic care and ensure smooth and appropriate discharge planning.

Main Duties
  1. Lead and contribute to the development of a comprehensive occupational therapy service in major trauma.
  2. Stand in for the Head of Service in their absence and represent Occupational Therapy at Trust-wide meetings.
  3. Provide a comprehensive assessment, treatment, and evaluation of patients referred to the team.
  4. Lead the team and provide day-to-day management, support, supervision, and organization of workload for staff.
  5. Recruit and manage staff within the team.
  6. Support the Head of Service in the day-to-day management of the department.
  7. Be professionally and legally accountable for your own actions and work with no supervision.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Ensure patients, relatives, and carers are aware of the role of the Occupational Therapist and components of the Occupational Therapy treatment programme.
  2. Obtain informed consent from patients and work within the current legal framework for patients who lack capacity to consent.
  3. Select from a range of assessments to aid diagnosis and address trauma management, sensory, cognitive, perceptual, behavioral, motor, splinting, psychosocial needs, and functional abilities.
  4. Make reliable interpretations of assessment results and inform other professionals in the diagnosis and management of patient needs.
  5. Carry out home assessments and follow-up visits to facilitate discharge.
  6. Assess for and provide aids and adaptive equipment to increase, enable, or compensate for independent function.
  7. Assess for wheelchairs, specialist seating, and positioning needs and treat as required.
  8. Assess for mechanical lifting devices and hoists and liaise with the community to organize delivery and training.
  9. Advise the Major Trauma team on rehabilitation and discharge options for patients.
  10. Review, record, and report regularly on patient progress and treatment.
  11. Provide education and advice to patients and carers on the complexity of the trauma process and physical and emotional deficits affecting safety and independence.
  12. Impart sensitive information and advice to patients and carers, which may have life-changing consequences.
  13. Use verbal and non-verbal communication tools to communicate effectively with patients.
  14. Plan, deliver, and review treatment programmes in close liaison with the multidisciplinary team, patients, carers, and family.
  15. Maintain up-to-date records of patient contacts, multidisciplinary care plans, Occupational Therapy assessments, and reports.
  16. Attend and participate in case conferences and ward meetings.
  17. Responsible for maintaining competence in moving and handling techniques and equipment.
  18. Provide complex discharge planning and ensure coordination of services in the community.
  19. Refer patients to relevant follow-up services to ensure continuation of treatment.
  20. Actively participate in clinical governance activities, including clinical audit, survey, research, and inter-disciplinary development.
  21. Assist in the recruitment of staff to the department and other services as required.
