Position Overview

A temporary consultant position is currently available:

The role encompasses responsibilities related to trauma management and limb reconstruction. The Trauma Service provides specialized consultant-level care for the local community.

The successful candidate will be part of a collaborative team, overseeing patients with musculoskeletal injuries. The limb reconstruction unit specializes in addressing non-union, bone infections, and post-traumatic deformities, managing over 2,000 cases each year.

The appointee will hold individual consultant duties, executed within a supportive team framework, offering exceptional opportunities for both personal and professional growth.

This position is ideal for a fully qualified orthopaedic surgeon with relevant experience, whether from the UK or internationally, who seeks to enhance their expertise in musculoskeletal trauma and limb reconstruction, particularly in the areas of bone infection and fracture-related complications. Candidates should ideally possess fellowship-level training in major orthopaedic trauma and limb reconstruction, along with experience in managing bone infections.

Key Responsibilities

The responsibilities of the post holder will be divided between two facilities, with the understanding that flexibility to work at various locations is a requirement of the role.

The appointee will have individual consultant responsibilities, performed within a collaborative team environment, which fosters excellent opportunities for ongoing personal and professional development.

Job Responsibilities

The appointee will be responsible for individual consultant duties, carried out within a team-oriented environment that promotes personal and professional development.

This role is suitable for a fully qualified orthopaedic surgeon with relevant experience, who is eager to practice and refine their skills in managing musculoskeletal trauma and limb reconstruction. Candidates should demonstrate fellowship-level training in orthopaedic trauma and limb reconstruction surgery.

Qualifications and Training

Essential

  • Full registration and license to practice
  • FRCS (Tr+Orth) or equivalent international qualification

Desirable

  • Current ATLS Provider certification
  • Completion of Definitive Surgical Skills or Damage Control Orthopaedics Course

Experience

Essential

  • General training in Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgery
  • Fellowship-level training in Trauma Orthopaedic Surgery
  • Specialist-level exposure to complex orthopaedic trauma (6 years)
  • 6-12 months as Clinical Fellow or equivalent in a Major Trauma / Level 1 Centre
  • 6-12 months experience as a Clinical Fellow or equivalent in Limb Reconstruction
  • Proven ability to make decisions at the consultant level and manage complex clinical scenarios

Skills and Knowledge

Essential

  • Strong leadership capabilities, with evidence of leading a clinical team at the consultant level in a teaching hospital
  • Effective administrative and time management skills, with training in clinical management
  • Understanding of NHS organization and the Government's modernization agenda
  • Demonstrated significant contributions to successful teamwork
  • Proficient computing skills, including word processing, spreadsheet applications, and web browsing
  • Experience in teaching and training undergraduates and trainees
  • Evidence of active participation in clinical governance, risk management, and audit activities
  • PhD/DPhil level research degree
