Position Overview

This role is for a Consultant Pediatric Specialist within a prominent healthcare institution. The individual in this position will primarily operate from the main hospital facility but will also be required to conduct outpatient consultations across various locations within the region. The pediatric and maternity services have undergone a comprehensive review in collaboration with national health authorities and local healthcare organizations. The agreed model centralizes all inpatient pediatric and neonatal services at the main hospital, ensuring that all deliveries occur at this facility, with potential future developments for additional maternity services in the area.

Key Responsibilities

The selected candidate will be expected to deliver a high standard of clinical care in pediatrics to patients within the healthcare trust and to local general practitioners.

The role includes providing expert consultation and advisory support to clinical colleagues both within the trust and in primary care settings.

The individual will also participate in the on-call rotation, ensuring that emergency and urgent care services are available outside of regular working hours, shared equitably with other consultant colleagues.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential

  • Full registration with the relevant medical authority.
  • Successful completion of specialty examinations or equivalent.
  • Postgraduate qualifications in pediatric medicine or equivalent.

Desirable

  • Advanced degrees.
  • Specialized qualifications in pediatric epilepsy.
  • Registration on the specialist register in pediatrics (or expected certification within six months of the interview).

Teaching and Leadership

Essential

  • Proven ability to instruct clinical skills to medical and nursing staff.
  • Experience in teaching clinical skills to both undergraduate and postgraduate students.
  • Willingness to engage in the assessment of pediatric trainees.

Desirable

  • Capability to supervise postgraduate research initiatives.

Management and Administrative Skills

Essential

  • Proficiency in organizing and prioritizing workload effectively.
  • Ability to ensure the efficient operation of specialized services.
  • Experience in managing outpatient service priorities.
  • Familiarity with clinical audit processes.

Desirable

  • Experience in leading specialized units and working groups.

Clinical Experience

Essential

  • Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for obtaining certification in pediatric medicine.
  • Ability to provide expert clinical opinions on a range of pediatric issues.
  • Capacity to take full responsibility for patient care.
  • Expertise in a pediatric subspecialty.
  • Experience managing a local neonatal unit.
  • Certification in advanced pediatric life support.
  • Training in child protection at an advanced level.
