Gastroenterology Physician

Job Overview

This role is part of a large team of medical gastroenterology physicians across two main hospital inpatient sites and outpatient services at Montagu Hospital. The post holder will be supported by ward-based junior medical staff and will share the work with several consultant colleagues.

Main Responsibilities

• Strengthen the delivery of a high-quality gastroenterology service across the hospital and community.
• Forge links between gastroenterology and acute medicine for acute patients.
• Liaise and develop working policies with relevant hospital departments, local general practitioners, nurses, and paramedical staff.
• Develop innovative practices in clinical patient management, focusing on high-quality care and emphasis on community management where appropriate.
• Develop the use of nurse practitioners and paramedical staff in the hospital and community.
• Develop a subspecialty interest.
• Maintain close links with gastroenterology colleagues, including at the other two sites.
• Provide a 7-day service with colleagues as resources allow.
• Teach and train undergraduates as well as postgraduates.
• Quality assurance of the service and individual practice.
• Share responsibility with colleagues for teaching and training of trainees, junior medical staff, nursing staff, primary care colleagues, and medical students.
• Ensure active participation in continuing professional development (CPD).

Qualifications

Essential Criteria

• MRCP or equivalent.
• You must be on the specialist register for gastroenterology and medicine or within 6 months of being admitted to the register for trainees, if currently in a training programme in the UK. In accordance with the regulations, all other categories of doctors must be eligible to be on the GMC specialist register (evidence required prior to commencement) to be considered for a consultant appointment by the advisory appointments committee.
• Applicants must continue to hold a licence to practise.

Desirable Criteria

• Completion of higher medical/gastroenterology degree or equivalent.

Experience

Essential Criteria

• Must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in all aspects of gastro-intestinal and common medical conditions.
• Ability to perform upper endoscopy and colonoscopy (JAG accredited).
• Shows ability to work with and lead others across professions.

Desirable Criteria

• Advanced endoscopy.
• Attendance at a recognised management course.

Teaching and Training

Essential Criteria

• Experience of and enthusiasm for clinical teaching of postgraduate doctors and non-medical staff.

Desirable Criteria

• Academic achievements/evidence of familiarity with research methods which have resulted in publications.
• Training in clinical and educational supervision.
• Attendance at a teaching course.
• Formal qualification in teaching/education.

Audit and Research

Essential Criteria

• Knowledge of audit principles and evidence of participation in and completion of audit projects and the implementation of outcomes.

Desirable Criteria

• Critical appraisal skills.
• Evidence of knowledge of research methodology.
