The Opportunity:

We are on the lookout for a Software Architect who is passionate about addressing diverse and intriguing client challenges. This role involves overseeing the architecture and high-level design of software-driven solutions, while also collaborating with client managers in a pre-sales context to cultivate relationships and develop solutions that foster future business expansion.

We are particularly interested in candidates with substantial experience in creating distributed software solutions that incorporate middleware technologies for managing information across networks, especially in environments where communication may be restricted or unreliable. Although solutions are generally validated in cloud-based settings, this role requires deployment in customer environments utilizing military-grade tactical equipment without internet access.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate a commitment to enhancing capabilities within their technical domain. This senior role will be crucial for capability advancement through participation in business development initiatives, assisting account managers in crafting customer offerings that respond to market needs, identifying opportunities to leverage our intellectual property, and accurately documenting customer requirements for the engineering team.

Your Role:

  • Innovate and develop advanced software solutions within the Defence sector, including distributed middleware, software-defined networks, and the application of artificial intelligence techniques (e.g., large language models, reinforcement learning).
  • Define and articulate software solutions in architectural terms, covering system boundaries, data flows, workflows, system layouts, and deployment strategies.
  • Act as the technical lead for both internally and externally funded projects.
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to fellow engineers, helping them understand their challenges and showcasing potential solutions.
  • Contribute to instilling an architecture-driven mindset within existing engineering practices.

Key Skills

  • Proven experience as a software architect in Defence, public sector, or industry, with proficiency in multiple programming languages.
  • Demonstrated ability to formulate comprehensive engineering management plans and lead teams in their execution, including continuous integration, continuous deployment, and test-driven development methodologies.
  • Familiarity with Agile methodologies such as Scrum and Kanban.
  • Experience in transforming research outputs (data science experimentation) into reliable software products.
  • Knowledge or experience in designing software solutions with a focus on performance and resource efficiency, particularly using middleware technologies.
  • Understanding of software architecture patterns that enhance reusability, productivity, and quality.
  • Experience in creating both plug-in and microservice architectures.
  • Proficiency in designing software for various data storage solutions (relational, NoSQL, Big Data, streaming data analytics).
  • Experience in deploying software across different environments, including on-device, on-premises, and cloud.
  • Ability to clearly communicate design decisions through textual and graphical representations (e.g., UML, Archimate).
  • Quick adaptability to new tools, frameworks, and programming languages.
  • Strong analytical skills to evaluate problems and articulate well-considered solutions.
  • Capability to create novel solutions when existing options are inadequate.

What you'll bring

As a Software Architect, you will possess a degree in a STEM field or equivalent practical experience.

You will engage with a variety of technologies—some familiar and others new to you, which you will learn to support specific projects. While comprehensive knowledge of all technologies is not expected, you should be proficient in several of them. The remaining technologies should be ones you can learn as needed:

  • Python/Java/Kotlin and associated backend and middleware frameworks.
  • SQL and NoSQL database systems, including PostgreSQL, SQLite, MongoDB, and Redis.
  • Linux-based operating systems, such as Ubuntu and Centos/RHEL.
  • Mobile operating systems, particularly Android.
  • Virtualization technologies, especially VMWare.
  • Messaging, serialization, and queuing systems like MQTT, Kafka, Protobuf, DDS, and XML.
  • Microservices, containers, and orchestration tools like Docker, Podman, and Kubernetes.
  • Infrastructure as Code tools, including Vagrant, Ansible, and Terraform.
  • Cloud platforms such as AWS and Azure.
  • Version control systems, particularly Git and GitLab.
  • Architectural tools like SPARX EA and Archimate.

Beyond technical expertise, you will be proactive and capable of effective communication with diverse stakeholders. You will thrive both independently and as part of a team, seizing opportunities as they arise. Your curiosity will drive you to explore the best approaches, solutions, and tools for each task.

Areas of Responsibility

  • Participate in and contribute to Agile ceremonies, utilizing Scrum, Kanban, or SAFe Agile methodologies.
  • Mentor team members in Software Engineering practices.
  • Collaborate with product owners and DevOps teams to schedule releases and implement CI/CD pipelines.
  • Work alongside security architects to ensure products and services are designed with security in mind.
  • Collaborate with quality engineers to uphold high standards of product and service quality.
  • Partner with architects to translate high-level architectural concepts into implementable designs.
  • Engage with senior leadership to effectively implement product and service enhancements.
  • Participate in and contribute to code reviews.
  • Collaborate with client managers to understand customer challenges and propose effective solutions.
