Position Overview

We are seeking a qualified Surgical Care Specialist (SCP) with a focus on Trauma and Orthopaedics, who possesses an MSc in Surgical Care Practice.

Role Classification

This position is classified as a band 7 role. However, candidates who do not currently fulfill the necessary skills and competencies for this level are encouraged to apply. Successful applicants will be appointed under annex 21 provisions, supported by a comprehensive development plan spanning three years.

Compensation Structure

During the initial year, remuneration will be set at 65% of the maximum band 7 salary, increasing to 70% in the second year and 75% in the third year, contingent upon meeting the criteria outlined in the development plan.

Upon successful completion of the development plan and attainment of the required skills and competencies, the postholder will receive full band 7 remuneration, starting at the minimum point on the pay scale, with opportunities for progression through standard pay increments.

Support and Development

Ongoing support and supervision will be provided to facilitate the practitioner's advancement to the band 7 role. This is an excellent opportunity for a band 6 professional seeking career progression.

Key Responsibilities

The SCP will be expected to operate within the four pillars of advanced practice:

  • Clinical: Extensive experience in major orthopaedic surgical procedures, with the ability to autonomously manage orthopaedic patients in various settings including wards, theatres, and outpatient clinics.
  • Education: Deliver educational sessions to multidisciplinary teams (MDT), mentor multi-professional trainees, and maintain a live portfolio evidencing advanced practice in surgical care.
  • Research: Conduct audits, quality improvement initiatives, service evaluations, and research relevant to surgical practice.
  • Leadership: Lead service improvements and contribute to the development of key health board strategies.

We are looking for a highly driven and experienced Senior Surgical Care Specialist to join our Trauma and Orthopaedic team. Candidates must have completed an MSc in Surgical Care Practice. Those without an MSc may be considered for a training position under annex 21, with expectations to work independently and make high-level clinical decisions across various settings.

The successful candidate will work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team and must demonstrate strong leadership and management capabilities. Additionally, involvement in research and educational delivery to a diverse professional audience will be integral to the role.

Essential:

  • MSc in Surgical Care Practice.
  • Extensive experience at band 6/7 in Theatre/Trauma and Orthopaedics.
  • Advanced theoretical knowledge and practical experience for clinical consultation and examination relevant to the practice area.

Desirable:

  • Ability to order blood products.
  • Independent prescribing capability.
  • Evidence of a live portfolio demonstrating the pillars of advanced practice.
