Job Title: Transport Manager

We are seeking an experienced Transport Manager to join our team at Biffa Waste Services Limited. As a key member of our operations team, you will be responsible for managing the day-to-day activities of our Traffic Office, ensuring the safe and efficient movement of our fleet of vehicles.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Manage the performance of traffic dispatchers, drivers, and operatives, ensuring compliance with health and safety, environmental, and operator license regulations.
  • Develop and implement strategies to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and increase profitability.
  • Ensure effective communication with internal and external customers, including liaison with fleet management and other stakeholders.
  • Monitor and report on key performance indicators (KPIs), including depot KPIs, service, safety, and profitability.
  • Manage a fleet of vehicles, including liaison with fleet management, safe vehicle operations, wheel security, and monitoring of vehicle gross weights.
  • Ensure compliance with transport and environmental legislation, including third-party insurance claims.
  • Play an integral role in supporting the management of ongoing cost control, actively seeking to improve efficiency and reduce operating costs.
  • Ensure all aspects of health and safety are strictly adhered to, including near miss reporting and emergency procedures.
Requirements:
  • Extensive experience as a Traffic Manager or similar role in the services or logistics industry.
  • National CPC is essential.
  • Experience of people and health and safety management within a unionized and multi-shift environment.
  • An understanding of lean methodology and the ability to work to clearly defined KPIs.
  • Proven experience of successful resource management/cost control.
  • Knowledge of transport legislation.
  • Knowledge of existing and impending environmental and health and safety legislation.
  • Strong knowledge of the local area.
  • The ability to work within a commercially driven and time-critical environment.
  • Strong commercial background.
  • Experience of operational line management, ideally in a trade union environment.
  • Previous exposure to managing in a labor-intensive, multi-shift environment.
  • The ability to communicate with conviction, plan with precision, and play well with others.
  • Minimum GCSE (or equivalent) in English and Maths, however A-Levels or a Degree certainly won't do any harm.
  • Willingness to travel within the UK for business meetings and project work that may be at other locations.
