Position Summary

We are seeking a Microsoft 365 Solutions Engineer to become a vital member of our dynamic and fast-paced technical Service Delivery team within the UK Government.

This position offers engaging and varied work, ensuring that no two days are alike, all within a supportive and inclusive atmosphere. The broader ICT team comprises professionals from diverse technical and business backgrounds who collaborate to accomplish our objectives.

In this role, your insights will be valued, and you will have the opportunity to influence the strategic direction of future network architecture for IT and Telecom services. Relevant training opportunities will be available, along with technical and business support from experienced colleagues.

This position reports to the Head of ICT Service Delivery. You will collaborate closely with all sectors of the ICT team, other government departments, Cabinet Office business units, and suppliers to maximize the utilization of our M365 suite, simplifying and modernizing business processes. Your responsibilities will include maintaining, enhancing, and rolling out necessary services, as well as introducing innovative ideas, developing new services, and creating a comprehensive M365 roadmap.

Utilizing your technical expertise, problem-solving abilities, and analytical skills, you will investigate and swiftly resolve any issues related to M365 services.

Key Responsibilities:

Your primary responsibilities will involve managing, maintaining, and enhancing the M365 technologies utilized by staff to ensure optimal service delivery, value for money, and appropriate security measures. You will also provide support for any M365 products.

  • Collaborating internally with the ICT Service Delivery team to develop modern, scalable, and secure IT systems.
  • Managing, maintaining, researching, recommending, and implementing configurations and best practices for: Exchange, Teams, SharePoint, OneDrive, and other related products.
  • Ensuring high availability and performance of our Microsoft 365 services.
  • Promoting the internal toolset and ensuring full utilization of its capabilities.
  • Liaising with users, architects, and business areas to identify and develop ideas on how the M365 suite can enhance efficiency, reduce costs, or eliminate the need for other systems.
  • Working with our Microsoft account managers and the ICT support team to stay informed about new features and releases, ensuring business areas are aware of new functionalities prior to rollout.
  • Guiding and training junior team members in daily procedures as necessary, enabling them to train users and complete basic ICT administration tasks.
  • Assisting the Head of No10 IT Service Delivery in developing network strategies and delivering supporting projects to meet business requirements on time and within budget, from procurement to service delivery.

Daily Activities May Include:

  • Monitoring, administering, and managing Microsoft 365 services, including Entra ID, Exchange Online/On-Prem, SharePoint, Teams, and Intune.
  • Ensuring service availability, performance, and security.
  • Investigating and resolving service faults.
  • Implementing preventative measures and providing solution recommendations.
  • Configuring collaboration features, permissions, and access controls.
  • Utilizing PowerShell or other scripting languages to automate repetitive tasks.
  • Creating and maintaining scripts for provisioning, user management, and reporting.
  • Performing administration, maintenance, and system tasks such as testing, applying updates, patches, and feature releases to Microsoft 365 services.
  • Documenting configurations, procedures, and best practices.
  • Optimizing licensing and subscription costs.
  • Mentoring and leading less experienced team members to develop their skills.
  • Staying updated with new practices and innovations in technology.
  • Providing recommendations to enhance system performance, security, and reliability.
  • Participating in the full team on-call support rota.
  • Engaging in various ad hoc technical, commercial, and business activities as required to support the team's work.

Important Note:

As with most organizations, we must maintain our services around the clock; therefore, there will be a requirement to work outside of standard hours, primarily planned but occasionally unplanned. Participation in an out-of-hours on-call rota will also be necessary, for which an allowance or overtime will be compensated. This rota includes weekday evenings, nights, weekends, and public holidays.

Occasional travel to remote sites may be required as part of this role, including potential national or international travel, which may involve overnight stays.

Person Specification

To be considered for this role, you must demonstrate the following essential experience and skills:

  • Expert knowledge of Microsoft 365 technologies, including Exchange, OneDrive for Business, Teams, SharePoint, Power Platform, Microsoft 365 Admin Centre, and Azure Services.
  • Working knowledge of enterprise mobility & security - Intune MDM & MAM, Entra ID, Identity, Information Protection, Threat Protection, Cloud App Security.
  • Experience in Microsoft Teams implementation, governance, and administration.
  • Expertise in Microsoft Teams voice and video services.
  • Proficient knowledge of Exchange Online, on-premises Exchange, and hybrid Exchange environments.
  • Active Directory / Entra ID management experience.
  • Understanding of Microsoft licensing and experience managing Microsoft licensing and Azure subscriptions.
  • Experience with 365/Azure service health monitoring.
  • Proficiency in PowerShell usage.
  • Ability to translate business requirements into actionable technical milestones.
  • Strong experience leading implementation projects of Microsoft 365 workloads and new features.
  • Experience in creating Power Automate flows to automate repetitive tasks.
  • Proactive approach to changes in the Microsoft ecosystem, ensuring alignment with cutting-edge technology.
  • Strong ability to produce and maintain technical documentation.
  • Proven technical experience in large enterprise environments managing multiple technology services.

Desirable Experience and Skills:

  • Recognized higher education in an IT-related field.
  • Certifications in Microsoft 365 (e.g., MS-102).
  • Network Security qualifications.
  • Familiarity with legislation related to Government/Public Sector IT.
  • First-line support experience for Windows and Mac devices, iPhones, Microsoft Office 365, and printing services.
