Job Overview

We are seeking a highly skilled Backend Software Engineer to join our team at NatWest.

  • This is an opportunity for a technically minded Software Engineer to contribute to our Ventures business, where digital innovation and strategic partnerships come together.
  • As a Backend Software Engineer, you will lead technical direction for a mission, develop and drive best practices, and enable teams to solve their hardest problems.
  • You will work with customer-focused agile squads and collaborate with product managers, architects, and engineers to define the next iteration of our digital products.
Key Responsibilities

You will establish and apply widely agreed software engineering principles and methodologies to design, develop, test, and maintain applications and services to achieve business and technology goals within required budgets and timelines.

You will oversee the quality of work, ensuring it meets technical standards.

  • Support the creation and implementation of engineering strategy and roadmaps across the business and within your mission.
  • Support squads within your mission with technical design, ensuring they meet current and future business needs.
  • Inject expertise to ensure high-quality solutions that are highly resilient and provide the best possible product experience for our customers.
  • Provide leadership of a Chapter and ensure technical priorities are clear and effectively communicated.
Requirements

You will need a strong background in software engineering, software design, and architecture, as well as extensive experience developing software in a Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) or micro-services paradigm.

You should have proven technical leadership experience for one or more teams and a background of implementing best practices, especially around scalability, availability, and performance.

  • A track-record of proactively identifying and solving business problems with your team.
  • Ability to effectively deliver value when faced with ambiguous problems.
  • Ability to act as a subject matter expert and communicate with clarity and empathy to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Understanding how to translate business objectives into data-driven insights that can then be leveraged by a team to produce better outcomes.
  • Expert-level practical and theoretical knowledge of Java software development and substantial experience of message-driven architectures.
