Job Description

Job Title: Maintenance Operative - Town Ranger

Job Summary:

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Maintenance Operative - Town Ranger to join our team at Stowmarket Town Council. As a key member of our outdoor team, you will be responsible for maintaining the town's public spaces, including parks, gardens, and other outdoor areas.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct grounds maintenance activities, including planting, minor landscaping, weed clearance, and spraying.
  • Regularly inspect public rights of way and report any issues or concerns.
  • Perform minor repairs and landscaping works as needed.
  • Clean identified signage and street furniture.
  • Conduct safety checks on play equipment in Town Council-owned playgrounds.
  • Engage with community and volunteer groups to coordinate practical activities and tasks.
  • Be responsible for the efficient setup and clearing of the weekly market.
  • Undertake litter picking duties and manage waste bin responsibilities.
  • React promptly to incidents of graffiti, vandalism, flyposting, or general untidiness in the town.
  • Support the Estate Specialist in performing general grounds maintenance tasks for outdoor areas.
  • Actively participate in the operational and logistical elements of the Town Council's annual programme of events.
  • Work with the Property & Facilities Lead to carry out maintenance, repair, and operational tasks for Town Council facilities and properties.
  • Support the delivery of the Town Council's Environmental Protection and Carbon Reduction Plan.

Requirements:

  • A good standard of literacy and numeracy.
  • Experience in a public-facing role.
  • Experience in landscape or grounds maintenance.
  • The ability to operate a range of machinery, including mowers, strimmers, and power tools.
  • Knowledge of health and safety regulations.
  • Strong DIY and general maintenance skills.
  • A collaborative and proactive attitude.
  • Strong organisational skills.
  • The ability to work under pressure.
  • Punctuality, reliability, and a friendly demeanour.
  • A full clean manual driving licence.
  • Familiarity with the local area and proximity to Stowmarket.
  • Experience driving/operating different vehicles and plant.
  • Knowledge of the services provided by Stowmarket Town Council.

Benefits:

  • A salary of £25,119 per annum, with pay award pending.
  • 22% employer pension contribution.
  • Minimum 31 days leave, including statutory holidays.
