About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Media Officer to join our Communications team at the Wellcome Sanger Institute. As a Media Officer, you will play a key role in shaping the future of life-changing science by telling the story of our world-leading research to the media and public.

Key Responsibilities
  • Tell the story of our science to the media and public through press releases, feature pitches, social media, and other initiatives.
  • Work across diverse areas of science, from human genetics to cancer, and across the tree of life.
  • Develop graphics and social media projects, prepare media and feature materials, and arrange visits to the Institute.
  • Collaborate with the team to develop a comprehensive communications strategy that showcases our research and its impact.
Requirements
  • Experience of writing clear, accurate scientific communications.
  • Scientific degree or demonstrable equivalent understanding of biology.
  • Demonstrable ability to write media releases, blogs, social media content, and to write for the web.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and diplomatic skills.
  • Demonstrable ability to persuade, influence, and negotiate with managers at all levels in an organisation.
  • Demonstrable ability to coordinate with external and internal contractors for delivery of agreed services/goods.
  • Highly organised and focused.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team.
  • Self-motivated and driven.
  • Technically skilled across print, online, and imagery.
  • Understanding of an academic science culture.
