About the Role

We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual to join our Waste Team at Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. As a Waste Operative Apprentice, you will play a crucial role in providing an efficient and effective service for the collection of hazardous, clinical, domestic, and recycling waste streams within our hospitals and external sites.

Key Responsibilities
  • Collect, handle, transport, and decant all waste streams in accordance with departmental and Trust policies, procedures, and statutory regulations.
  • Keep ward and department disposal cupboards clear of all waste at all times and move to outside collection points, ensuring that all waste remains segregated during transportation.
  • Drive/operate relevant vehicles/trailers within the hospital environment and when collecting from external sites.
  • Conduct daily tug/van maintenance checks to ensure lights, horn, tyres, etc., are all in working order and health and safety compliant.
  • Undertake weekly cleaning of electric vehicles, trailers, and vans.
  • Ensure clinical waste containers are kept locked at all times and tagged with the correct colour-coded waste stream.
  • Clean domestic waste bins with a pressure washer as requested.
  • Collect, transport, and decant bags of soiled linen in accordance with any statutory regulations and Trust/Departmental policies and procedures.
  • Sort and consolidate waste at collection points and prepare for collection by waste contractors.
Training and Development

This Level 2 apprenticeship is an 18-month training programme, which will be completed while working in the Waste Department at Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust (Eastern Services). Training will be carried out through Exeter College on a day-release basis (term time). You will study for a Level 2 - Facilities Operative Apprenticeship or a Level 2 - Customer Service Practitioner Apprenticeship with on-the-job training also being provided to the successful applicant.

Working Pattern

Hours per week, including weekends and public bank holidays. You will study one day a week at Exeter College.
