Role Overview
We are seeking a versatile Lead Scientist to enhance our R&D lab operations based in Stevenage. This position offers a unique opportunity to engage in a dual role, contributing to both our Molecular Cell Biology research and laboratory operations as we expand.
Your Contributions
In this pivotal role, you will be instrumental in advancing our in-house molecular biology and cell culture initiatives, thereby boosting our R&D capabilities and refining our laboratory operations.
Working within a dynamic and agile team, you will serve as a key resource for various in-house projects, which may include novel method development, scaling existing technologies, and managing multiple workstreams to support our R&D objectives and laboratory growth.

Key Responsibilities- Enhance and optimize methodologies for executing cell-based and in vitro assays at scale.
- Refine sequencing protocols and platforms.
- Engage in collaborative genomic projects.
- Conduct internal assay development across various formats.
- Collaborate with the broader R&D team to formulate project-specific experimental strategies, techniques, and procedures, while interpreting and modeling data.
- Oversee a variety of tasks that support and advance laboratory operations and administration for sequencing workflows.
- Independently manage sample processing, library preparation workflows (e.g., RNA-seq), and other molecular cloning and mammalian cell culture activities.
Qualifications
Technical Expertise
- Minimum MSc with at least 6 years of experience in a biotech or CRO, focusing on sequencing-based workflows and readouts.
- Proven hands-on experience with NGS library preparation, particularly in single-cell sequencing library preparation, optimizing novel next-generation sequencing assays, RNASeq library prep, and troubleshooting protocols.
- Demonstrable expertise in RNASeq library preparation and other NGS methods.
- Extensive familiarity with fundamental molecular biology techniques, including mammalian cell culture, RNA/DNA extraction, PCR, qPCR, PAGE, molecular cloning, and DNA/RNA methodologies.
- Hands-on experience with spatial transcriptomics and/or proteomics data generation.
- A strong commitment to establishing processes and operational excellence within the laboratory.
Interpersonal Skills
- Attention to detail: take pride in maintaining well-documented lab notebooks and comprehensive experimental plans prior to commencing experiments.
- Exceptional time and project management, communication, and teamwork abilities.
- Capability to navigate complexity, manage diverse projects, and meet defined timelines.
- Previous experience in a fast-paced environment, collaborating with colleagues who may be internationally distributed.
- Highly organized, with demonstrated experience in laboratory management tasks such as SOP writing and inventory oversight.
Preferred Skills
- Technical expertise in applying chemical probing methods (e.g., SHAPE-MaP, DMS-MaP, and M2-seq).
- Experience with western blotting and other antibody-based techniques (e.g., immunofluorescence, antibody optimization).
- Experience in developing and optimizing assays, including cell-based and in vitro assays, for high-throughput studies.
