Job Title: Assistant Psychologist

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Assistant Psychologist to join our team in the Adult Community Mental Health Teams (CMHTs) in Liverpool. The successful candidate will work closely with qualified Psychological Professionals to deliver effective and evidence-based psychological therapies to clients.

Main Responsibilities:
  • Assist in the formulation and delivery of interventions involving the psychological treatment and/or management of a client's problems, under the supervision of a qualified clinical psychologist.
  • Provide one-to-one consultations with service users, working autonomously within the limits of instruction and personal competence.
  • Use a degree of initiative and work independently with service users on planned work, exercising judgement based on good practice (NICE) and local operating procedures.
  • Co-facilitate self-help groups under the supervision of a qualified Clinical Psychologist.
  • Assist in researching and gathering up-to-date materials for new groups within the service as necessary.
  • Work with potentially distressing material in relation to service users' personal histories and presentation, including risk to self and others.
  • Prepare agreed clinical letters and reports accurately in the accepted format in a timely manner.
  • Receive regular clinical supervision in accordance with professional practice guidelines.
  • Develop skills and competencies that assist in the delivery of current duties through engagement with CPD opportunities and self-guided learning.
  • Contribute to the training and support of other staff where applicable.
  • Assist in the design and implementation of service development projects within the service as required.
  • Attend multidisciplinary team meetings where necessary.
  • Assist in the design and implementation of audit and research projects where necessary.
  • Undertake data collection, analysis, the production of reports and summaries, using IT and statistical programmes, where applicable.
  • Undertake searches of evidence-based literature and research to assist qualified professional psychologists in evidence-based practice in individual work and work with other professionals, where necessary.
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of high professional standards of practice, through active participation in training and development programmes, in consultation with the supervisor.
  • Maintain clinical record keeping and report writing in accordance with professional codes of practice of the British Psychological Society and Trust policies and procedures.
  • Undertake specific administrative duties as required.
  • Maintain the confidentiality of information about patients, staff, and other Trust business in accordance with professional codes of conduct and relevant legislation such as the Data Protection Act.
  • Promote the concepts of equality of opportunity and managing diversity Trust-wide.
  • Be aware of the responsibilities placed upon them under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, paying due regard to health and safety in the workplace and management of risk to maintain a safe working environment for patients, visitors, and employees.
  • Maintain consistent high professional standards and act in accordance with the relevant code of professional conduct (if applicable). Employees are expected to participate in the performance review process.
  • Support the development of performance standards within the Service/Department to ensure the service is responsive to and meeting the needs of its customers.
Requirements:
  • A minimum of 12 months previous experience of work with people with mental health problems and/or other disabilities.
  • Experience of teaching and training in the application of psychological principles to mental health problems.
  • Experience of research evaluation and audit of the application of psychological principles to mental health problems.
  • Experience of paid work in direct care provision.
  • Previous experience as an Assistant in an NHS setting.
  • Experience of psychometric assessment.
  • Proven track record of experience of research evaluation and audit of the application of psychological principles to mental health problems.
Skills and Qualifications:
  • High-level communication skills (written and verbal) including an ability to communicate and work in settings in which the atmosphere may be highly emotive.
  • Experience using computers for databases or data-analysis.
  • Experience of report writing.
  • Demonstrated high-level ability to communicate sensitive information to service users, carers, and colleagues in a way that facilitates engagement.
  • An understanding of the needs and difficulties of people with mental health problems or other disabilities.
  • A demonstrated ability to apply existing psychological knowledge to a mental health context.
  • An understanding of psychological principles applied to healthcare.
  • Undertaken further, relevant post-graduate study.
  • Skills in SPSS for Windows.
  • Undertaking further relevant post-graduate study leading to recognised qualification.
Personal Qualities:
  • Clear experience of interacting effectively with staff from all disciplines.
  • An interest in working with people with mental health problems or other disabilities.
  • Clear experience of interacting with people with mental health problems.
  • Ability to work with a high level of autonomy within the boundaries of the assistant role.
Other Requirements:
  • Ability to accept and use supervision appropriately and effectively.
  • A desire to explore a career in Professional Psychology.
Training and Qualifications:
  • A second-class honours degree or higher in psychology or psychology as a main subject.
  • Entitlement to graduate membership of the British Psychological Society.
  • Further post-graduate training in relevant areas of professional psychology, mental health practice, and/or research design and analysis.
