Position Overview

South Reading and Shinfield Group Medical Practice is in search of a Pharmacy Support Specialist dedicated to enhancing the quality and safety of healthcare services provided to patients within our practice.

This role presents a unique opportunity to join a growing and diverse team. You will operate across multiple locations managed by the organization, focusing on elevating patient care. With a strong community ethos and supportive colleagues, we strive to exceed the expectations of our registered patients.

The successful candidate will be a pharmacy technician registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council, expected to function within their professional scope while collaborating with a multidisciplinary team in a general practice setting.

Your contributions will be vital in refining prescribing practices and enhancing patient care. This encompasses streamlining repeat prescribing processes, advocating for digital solutions, minimizing medication waste, and reducing clinical risks associated with medication management.

You will assist patients in maximizing the benefits of their medications, adhering to established protocols and guidelines.

Key Responsibilities

All Pharmacy Support Specialists must operate within their competencies and maintain professional indemnity for their role.

  • Actively participate in conducting regular medication audits and ensure that key performance indicators for the team are consistently monitored, assessed, and achieved. This includes supporting uniform practices in GP prescribing.
  • Aid in the implementation of medication optimization and management incentive programs, as well as patient safety audits.
  • Collaborate closely with local pharmacies situated near the practice.
  • Ensure optimal dosing of medications and oversee team efforts for medication adjustments and synchronization to guarantee safe and effective prescribing.
  • Engage with community pharmacies regarding the introduction of electronic repeat dispensing as appropriate, aiming to enhance operational efficiencies.
  • Support practice pharmacists and clinicians with medication reconciliation in line with practice protocols, updating patient medical records and prescriptions accordingly.
  • Assist practice reception teams in managing general prescription requests, allowing GPs and clinical pharmacists to focus on more complex clinical inquiries.
  • Play a crucial role in the practice workflow concerning medication, including the accurate coding of medications in correspondence.
  • Provide expertise to address both public health and social care needs of patients, offering lifestyle advice and assistance in addressing local health disparities.

About Our Organization

South Reading and Shinfield Group Medical Practice is a well-established, large GP practice, recognized for its excellence in all categories by regulatory bodies. Our practice operates across two sites in South Reading, staffed by friendly, professional, and experienced GPs, along with a diverse multidisciplinary team and administrative personnel offering a comprehensive range of clinical services.

We maintain a policy of not employing individuals who are registered as patients at the practice. Employment offers are contingent upon registration with a different GP practice.

Job Requirements

Qualifications

Essential

  • A minimum of 4 GCSEs at Grade C or above (or equivalent qualification) in English, Mathematics, and Science subjects.
  • Registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council.

Desirable

  • NVQ Level 3 in Pharmacy Skills.

Experience

Essential

  • Proven experience as a qualified registered pharmacy technician in primary care, community, or hospital pharmacy settings.

Knowledge and Skills

Essential

  • Minimum of 4 GCSEs at Grade C (or equivalent) in Mathematics, English, and two Science subjects.

Desirable

  • Proficiency in using required GP clinical systems and Microsoft Office applications.
