About Sustaining Engineering: The Sustaining Engineering team plays a pivotal role in enhancing various open-source software by addressing software issues reported by clients. The software ecosystem encompasses everything from the kernel to user-space applications and IaaS platforms. This position oversees one of our regional teams and is part of a network of managers reporting directly to the global Director of Sustaining Engineering.
Customer Impact: Our clientele develops large-scale, mission-critical infrastructure and application solutions utilizing Ubuntu and Canonical's open-source offerings. Although not directly involved in product development, the Sustaining Engineering team, as part of Support Engineering, resolves challenges for customers and contributes to the broader Open Source community. The team is well-equipped with experts across various time zones, ensuring a balanced work-life dynamic and continuous professional growth for each member.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead and manage a geographically distributed team of engineers.
- Recruit, coach, mentor, and provide constructive feedback for career development.
- Oversee shift scheduling, track key performance indicators (KPIs), and facilitate training.
- Ensure timely delivery of bug fixes, patches, and technical solutions across diverse technology domains, including but not limited to Ubuntu, OpenStack, Ceph, Kubernetes, Juju, and MAAS.
- Exemplify Canonical's values in customer interactions.
- Set and manage expectations with other engineering teams, senior management, and external stakeholders.
- Promote and enhance modern software development practices.
- Foster a healthy, collaborative engineering culture aligned with company values.
- Collaborate with various teams within the organization.
- Work remotely with occasional travel for internal and external events.
Qualifications:
- Deep interest and experience in three or more of the following: Ubuntu Linux (kernel or userspace), Kubernetes, OpenStack, Ceph, QEMU/KVM, LXC/LXD, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, deb or snap packaging.
- Professional experience in software delivery using C, C++, Go, Python, or similar languages.
- Strong knowledge and passion for software development.
- Demonstrated leadership skills in organizing and prioritizing complex problem resolution and bug fixes.
- Familiarity with version control systems such as Git.
- Experience with debugging tools like GDB, crash, or others.
- Commitment to testing methodologies and maintaining code quality.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.
- Experience with Linux, preferably Ubuntu.
- Familiarity with Open Source and Open Source Business Models.
- People management experience in a support organization is a significant advantage.
