Job Title: Head of Natural History Library Collections

Harvard University's Faculty of Arts and Sciences Libraries seeks an innovative and experienced librarian to lead the development of natural history library collections and services. Reporting to the Director for Sciences and Engineering Services, the successful candidate will oversee the Ernst Mayr Library for the Museum of Comparative Zoology and the Botany Libraries of the Harvard University Herbaria.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop and implement a strategic vision for natural history library collections and services.
  • Collaborate with faculty, curators, and researchers to ensure the selection and maintenance of well-balanced collections to support teaching and research programs.
  • Oversee the management of special collections and archives in both libraries, working closely with the Senior Archivist.
  • Plan and implement outreach efforts to academic departments and programs, promoting library services and collections.
  • Supervise and evaluate a team of librarians and staff, providing guidance and support to ensure excellent service delivery.
  • Stay up-to-date with emerging trends in science research and learning, applying this knowledge to inform library services and collections.
Requirements:
  • Master's degree in Library Science or a related field.
  • 4-6 years of experience in academic library administration, with a focus on natural history and museum collections.
  • Proven leadership and management skills, with experience in supervising staff and managing budgets.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with faculty, curators, and researchers.
  • Demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and antiracism, with a record of promoting these values in previous roles.
