Are you dedicated to fostering the reading abilities of young learners? Do you possess experience in conducting phonics sessions and tailored interventions? A prominent primary school in Southport is on the lookout for a committed Literacy Support Assistant to become part of their educational team, focusing on the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and Key Stage 1 (KS1).

Role Overview

As a Literacy Support Assistant, you will be instrumental in enhancing students' reading proficiency. Your mornings will involve delivering focused phonics lessons to a designated small group, ensuring each child receives the necessary support to advance. In the afternoons, you will implement customized interventions across EYFS and KS1, assisting pupils who need extra help to reach their phonics objectives.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct daily phonics sessions for small groups, utilizing a structured phonics curriculum.
  • Identify students requiring additional support and provide targeted interventions to help them achieve their reading goals.
  • Collaborate closely with classroom teachers to design and execute phonics activities that align with the educational curriculum.
  • Track and evaluate students' progress, offering feedback to educators and parents as necessary.
  • Contribute to creating a positive and motivating learning atmosphere where all children can thrive.
  • Modify teaching strategies and materials to accommodate the diverse needs of students.
  • Assist in developing resources and methods to enhance phonics instruction and learning throughout the school.
  • Participate in relevant training and professional development opportunities to remain informed about best practices in phonics education.
Person Specification

Essential:

  • Experience working with young children, preferably in an educational environment.
  • A solid understanding of phonics and early literacy development.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and inspire young learners.
  • Patience, empathy, and a genuine passion for helping children succeed.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with educators and other staff members.
  • Effective organizational skills and the ability to manage time efficiently.
  • A commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children.

Desirable:

  • Prior experience in delivering phonics programs (e.g., Read Write Inc., Letters and Sounds).
  • A relevant qualification in education or childcare.
  • Experience in providing interventions or additional support to children with learning challenges.
