Position Overview

The Catering Division at Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is dedicated to providing exceptional dining services for both patients and retail customers. This role involves overseeing operations in both sectors.

The ideal candidate will ensure adherence to all relevant policies and procedures, taking responsibility for the quality of daily service delivered to patients and patrons.

Supervisors are expected to effectively manage and support catering staff while maintaining clear communication with all team members and visitors.

The successful applicant will possess prior supervisory experience in a fast-paced catering environment and hold relevant catering qualifications, preferably NVQ Level 2, with a willingness to pursue Level 3.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage frontline staff effectively.
  • Organize and oversee staff schedules.
  • Conduct staff training and performance evaluations.
  • Implement new menu offerings and operational systems.
  • Ensure completion of necessary documentation, including food orders and safety compliance records.
  • Work within budgetary constraints while managing staffing levels, including addressing absenteeism.

Job Responsibilities

  • Ensure staff schedules are adequately covered and allocate tasks to catering assistants. Collaborate with management to maintain service continuity during staffing shortages.
  • Provide training for staff in essential job functions under management guidance.
  • Facilitate health and safety training, ensuring compliance with mandatory training requirements.
  • Oversee the implementation of toolbox training and maintain accurate training records.
  • Conduct staff performance reviews.
  • Collaborate on health and safety matters, ensuring compliance with current regulations.
  • Monitor staff performance and address any issues with management.
  • Under management direction, issue informal disciplinary warnings as necessary.
  • Report any staff non-compliance with organizational values.
  • Maintain hygiene standards, ensuring compliance with food safety policies and documentation.
  • Assist with basic food preparation, ensuring presentation and portion control meet established standards.
  • Address customer complaints in conjunction with management, completing necessary documentation.
  • Engage with patients to discuss dietary needs and feedback.
  • Conduct ward visits as per safety policies, liaising with nursing staff and patients.
  • Contribute to departmental development by proposing changes to working practices.
  • Report any maintenance issues requiring attention.
  • Supervise cleanliness and maintenance of assigned areas and equipment.
  • Promote retail sales within catering outlets.
  • Ensure adherence to audit procedures within the department.
  • Manage stock control within designated areas, alerting management to potential issues.
  • All employees are required to comply with health and safety regulations, ensuring the safety of themselves and others.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Level 3 Food Hygiene Certificate.
  • ILM certificate or NVQ Level 3 in a catering-related subject or equivalent.

Experience

Essential

  • Previous supervisory experience in a catering setting.
  • Experience in industrial catering environments.

Knowledge

Essential

  • Understanding of food hygiene principles.
  • Basic knowledge of health and safety regulations.
  • Familiarity with cash handling and till operations.

Skills

Essential

  • Strong communication skills.
  • Basic data entry skills, either manually or digitally.
  • Basic numeracy and literacy abilities.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a team.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
