Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced Lead Brewer to oversee the brewery operations at London Brewers Alliance. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring production goals are met while maintaining quality standards.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage and Operate the Brewery: Oversee the brewery operations, ensuring all operations are efficient, hygienic, and safe.
  • Oversee Packaging Department Equipment: Manage packaging department equipment, including kegging equipment, casking equipment, canning line, and all associated machinery/supplies.
  • Ensure Documentation and Compliance: Ensure paperwork and documentation for all brewing systems, such as brew sheets, daily brewery tasks, delivery notes, are kept up to date.
  • Implement Standard Operating Procedures: Ensure brewery SOPs are being followed in daily operations, edit and adjust as needed.
  • Quality Control and Improvement: Seek continuous improvement to the product and process while maintaining beer quality through analysis and taste panels.
  • Training and Development: Understand all brewery processes, provide cross-training opportunities by covering job duties for individuals.
  • Raw Materials and Inventory Management: Assist in raw materials acquisition and maintaining inventory.
  • Third-Party Supplier Management: Manage 3rd party packaging suppliers.
  • Workplace Organization: Promote a clean and organized workspace.
  • Operational Challenges and Downtime: Assist in reducing operational challenges and minimizing downtime.
  • Brewhouse Maintenance and Improvement: Maintain brewhouse maintenance and improvement plan in agreement with Head Brewer.
  • Equipment Maintenance and Repair: Perform regular preventive maintenance on brewing equipment.
  • Engineering Tasks: Undertake in-house engineering tasks on brewing equipment as required.
  • Workspace Improvement Projects: Lead workspace improvement projects in the brewery.
  • Stocktakes and Inventory Management: Conduct stocktakes daily, weekly, monthly, and at any other time as required.
  • New Product Development: Develop new products to expand the brewery's beer portfolio.
  • Sales and Distribution Support: Work closely with sales and distribution teams to meet sales demand.
  • Warehousing and Storage: Manage warehousing and storage of all packaging, ingredients, and finished goods.
  • Management Meetings and Strategic Planning: Attend regular management meetings and provide strategic and tactical input into the brewery business plans.
  • Represent the Brewery: Represent the brewery and support the sales team at events such as trade shows, beer festivals, or brewery tours.
  • Brewer Duties: Perform normal brewer duties as outlined in the Brewer job description.
Key Characteristics
  • Brewing Experience: Good level of brewing experience with a professional brewing qualification or equivalent experience.
  • Industry Knowledge: Extensive knowledge of industry compliance standards, including safety standards, Government regulatory programs, HACCP, and production management systems.
  • Process Control and Troubleshooting: Strong understanding of process controls, troubleshooting, and process improvement.
  • Practical Engineering Skills: Practical engineering skills and experience of brewery-related repair and maintenance tasks.
  • Beer Development: Passion for beer and the development of new beers.
  • Organizational and Communication Skills: Strong organizational, planning, and communication skills combined with attention to detail.
  • Work Ethic and Adaptability: Strong work ethic and ability to multi-task, prioritize, adapt to changing situations, and stay focused on objectives.
  • Flexibility and Teamwork: Flexibility and willingness to take a hands-on approach to support the brew-team and brewery when required.
  • Professionalism and Passion: Passion and professionalism with an optimistic outlook to life and beer.
  • Self-Motivation and Communication: Self-motivated, organized, and energetic individual with good communication skills and great troubleshooting skills.
  • Distilling Experience: Distilling experience preferred but not essential.
  • Forklift License: Forklift License preferred.
Other Duties
  • Training and Development: Participate in training and development activities.
  • Covering Duties: Cover the duties of other staff as and when required.
  • Additional Responsibilities: Perform any other duties as determined by the Senior Management team.

£28K - £34K based on experience
