Principal Structural Engineer

Job Description

We are seeking a highly skilled Principal Structural Engineer to join our Structures team in Southampton or Basingstoke. This opportunity has arisen in our Building & Places Business Unit, which focuses on projects within the Built Environment.

Our team has a proven track record of delivering complex projects for private and public clients. We offer a dynamic work environment with excellent transport links, a diverse mix of sectors, and a strong focus on professional development.

The structures team workload includes feasibility studies, scheme designs, detailed designs, assessments, inspections, and construction support on various building developments and heavy civil structural projects in the defence, aviation, and education sectors.

Some of our current projects include:

Devonport Dockyard: We have recently completed the scheme design for this project and are progressing to detailed design. The project involves seismic qualification of strengthening measures to the existing dock wall structures.

Heathrow Terminal 2: This project involves designing a 120m long link bridge, multiple mezzanine platforms, and amendments to the existing structure. We are providing a multidisciplinary team and coordinating with stakeholders across the Heathrow campus.

Reigate Junior School: This project is currently in planning and has progressed to RIBA 4. We are providing multi-discipline services from Basingstoke with Noviun Architects.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead structural engineering projects and engage with clients to define requirements and present project progress.
  • Contribute to business development and effectively control commercial, managerial, and technical aspects of projects.
  • Undertake or lead a team of engineers and technicians in undertaking technically challenging projects within prescribed programme constraints.
  • Coordinate project delivery with internal and external clients and undertake structural engineering projects by performing analyses and calculations.
  • Supervise work undertaken by others and ensure it is carried out to the appropriate technical standard and managed to programme and budget.
Requirements
  • Demonstrable track record in delivering projects for clients or significant contribution towards project delivery.
  • Ability to deliver design solutions, lead teams, and successfully manage projects.
  • Highly motivated individual with excellent communication skills and knowledge of construction contracts and commercial awareness.
  • Ability to obtain MoD security clearance and degree educated or equivalent in a relevant subject such as Civil or Structural Engineering.
  • Strong background in the use of analysis software and high level of technical skills, including knowledge of Tekla Structural Designer and LUSAS software packages.
  • Current driving license and willingness to travel to visit sites.
  • Knowledge of the Eurocode Standards and experience of working on heavy civil structural engineering projects and/or seismically qualified structures.
Qualifications
  • Must be Chartered with the IStructE or IC.
