Job Summary:
We are seeking an experienced Senior Design Engineer to lead the delivery of engineering design tasks or projects related to Radioactive Materials transport. The successful candidate will have a strong background in engineering design and substantiation, with the ability to define scopes of work and lead small projects.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead the delivery of engineering design tasks or projects: Responsible for leading the delivery of engineering design tasks or projects to meet agreed time, cost, and quality objectives.
- Line management of design engineers: Line management of design engineers and third-party suppliers.
- Technical advice and support: Provide technical advice to NTS and Clients on Radioactive Materials transport engineering activities and projects.
- Direct, author and collate transport safety cases: Direct, author and collate transport safety cases that demonstrate full compliance with IAEA SSR-6 regulations.
- Ensure quality and consistency: Ensure all technical substantiation work supporting authored transport safety cases are of appropriate quality and internal consistency.
- Regulatory knowledge and compliance: Working knowledge of IAEA SSR-6 regulations and ability to directly discuss and defend interpretations of specific clauses with the Competent Authority.
- Support to design engineers: Support to design engineers and checking of their work.
- Monitoring and reporting: Monitoring and reporting of work against schedule and budget, and other KPIs as agreed.
- Process and system development: Work to current management processes and systems and contribute to their continued development and improvement.
Dimensions:
The role will involve working with a team of professional design engineers and/or engineering analysts, with a potential direct report of Design Engineer(s) and/or Engineering Apprentice.
Internal and External Relationships:
- Internal stakeholders: Project Managers and Project Controls Engineers during development and delivery of projects, Operations department to facilitate RAM transport, Commercial department to support bids for work, Procurement department to support asset manufacture.
- External stakeholders: Customers in the NDA estate and wider nuclear industry, Competent authority (ONR), Contractors delivering manufacturing works or providing services e.g. FEA, physical testing, independent inspection.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience Needed:
- Relevant degree in engineering: Relevant degree in engineering (ideally mechanical), or equivalent academic qualifications and experience.
- Recognised professional engineering qualification: Recognised professional engineering qualification.
- Experience/knowledge/understanding of engineering design and substantiation: Demonstrable experience/knowledge/understanding of engineering design and substantiation as applied to RAM transport.
- Ability to define scopes of work: Ability to define scopes of work, including development of technical risk identification and mitigation strategies.
- Ability to work and communicate effectively: Ability to work and communicate effectively with other areas of NTS and/or the Client to ensure solutions meet the stated intent.
- Leadership and project management: Experience and capability to lead an engineering activity or small project with minimal guidance, support and/or checking required.
Other Contextual Information:
- Workload management: Manage own workload, including time and deadline management.
- Performance management: Manage own performance including self-development.
- Health and wellbeing: Manage health and wellbeing.
- Mentorship: Mentor less experienced members of the engineering design team.
- Corporate decisions and initiatives: Be expected to support and implement corporate decisions and initiatives.
- On-call duties: Be required to be on-call out of hours on a rota as part of this role.
- Security clearance: SC clearance required.
