Job Title: Senior Optical Engineer

Job Summary:

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Optical Engineer to join our team at Leonardo, a leading developer of electro-optic targeting and surveillance systems. As a Senior Optical Engineer, you will play a key role in the development of next-generation systems, working closely with our UK team to design and manufacture complex optical systems.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to the research, development, and manufacturing phases of optical engineering lifecycle
  • Develop systems architecture and requirements
  • Design and develop electro-optical systems, including lens and optical performance analysis/simulations
  • Ensure quality and consistency of detailed design, including numerical calculations and tolerance studies
  • Support the integration and test of electro-optical systems
  • Engage with optical sub-contractor partners/suppliers
  • Review optical designs in accordance with business and industry standards and knowledge of ISO 10110

Requirements:

  • Minimum of second-class upper degree in Physics or Opto-Electronics
  • Proven understanding of classical optics principles
  • Lens design and optical analysis experience
  • Experience with industry-recognised tools, such as OpticStudio, Code V, FRED, etc.
  • Appreciation of mechanical and electronics designs associated with electro-optical systems
  • Problem-solving skills using a structured, logical approach
  • Involvement in the test and manufacture of optical systems

Desirable:

  • MSc or PhD in an applied optics field or related
  • Experience in the definition and commissioning of optical testing
  • Knowledge of laser optics
  • Electro-optical systems modelling
  • Model-based design
  • Numerical, programming, and symbolic software skills
