Vision Impairment Service (VIS)
The Specialist Teaching and Learning Assistant will be responsible for planning, preparing, and delivering learning activities that cater to the needs of children and young people with vision impairment. This role requires a strong understanding of the implications of vision impairment on development and the ability to support learners in accessing the curriculum.
The successful candidate will work closely with Qualified Teachers of Vision Impaired (QTVI) and Habilitation Specialists to deliver support for access to learning, independent living skills, and early mobility and orientation skills. They will also ensure that learners develop appropriate skills in the use of specialist equipment and resources and support the use of digital technology in learning activities.
The Specialist Teaching and Learning Assistant will prepare, plan, and manage specific activities/teaching programmes to support learners' development within agreed work programmes (Braille/print). They will also monitor and evaluate progress within target areas to provide objective and accurate feedback to teachers.
Key Responsibilities:
- Support Qualified Teachers of Vision Impaired (QTVI) and Habilitation Specialists in delivering learning activities
- Plan, prepare, and deliver learning activities that cater to the needs of children and young people with vision impairment
- Ensure learners develop appropriate skills in the use of specialist equipment and resources
- Support the use of digital technology in learning activities
- Prepare, plan, and manage specific activities/teaching programmes to support learners' development
Requirements:
- NNEB; BTEC, NVQ or similar in areas of child development
- Braille Qualification / willingness to work towards a Braille qualification
- Understanding of VI and its implications on development
- Experience of working with children and young people with vision impairment in a variety of settings
- Welsh Language Skills
Desirable:
- Intervenor Accreditation (Sense)
- Specific knowledge of low vision aids and their use in the classroom and outdoor environments
- Knowledge of supporting learners with sensory impairment in accessing the curriculum
