About the Role

We are seeking an exceptional ecological modeler to apply the world-leading benthic ecosystem model (BORIS) to critical scientific questions and areas of societal impact.

The successful candidate will use the BORIS model to investigate how benthic ecosystems may respond to climate change, globally, and contribute to future IPCC reports and ocean assessments.

Additionally, the candidate will apply the BORIS model to quantify the impact of human activities such as deep-sea mining and carbon dioxide removal schemes involving biomass dumping.

The role also involves seeking funding opportunities to support the development of BORIS and associated research projects.

Key responsibilities include publishing research findings in high-impact scientific journals and communicating results to stakeholders, policymakers, and the general public through presentations, reports, and other outreach activities.

The ideal candidate will have expertise in numerical modeling, model testing, and validation, as well as excellent written and oral communication skills in English.

They will also have a proven track record of presenting research findings to a wide range of audiences, particularly in peer-reviewed literature.

Experience in developing and applying ecological models based on coupled differential equations is essential, as is awareness of benthic ecology and understanding of pressures on benthic ecosystems.

The successful candidate will be part of a dynamic and vibrant community at the National Oceanography Centre (NOC), working towards improving the world through integrated marine science and technology.

We offer a generous set of benefits, including 30 days annual leave, plus 3.5 local closure days and 8 public bank holidays, and a contributory Group Personal Pension Plan.

The NOC has a hybrid working approach, allowing staff to work from home up to 2 days per week. We can also support visa applications where required and offer financial support with relocation for overseas applicants willing to move to the UK.
