Job Overview

The BBC is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Principal Technical Operator to join our team as a Studio Director for our flagship regional news programme, South East Today. This is a multi-skilled role that requires the ability to work on varied shifts across our output, including directing live television in a news environment and leading a multi-skilled team under tight time pressures.

Main Responsibilities

  • Working as a Principal Technical Operator in our multi-skilled Operations team, with the opportunity to work as the Studio Director for our main regional news programme.
  • Working on our other bulletins, including early morning and late evening shifts, and covering other shifts such as Technical Manager, Sound Mixer, Editing, or work on our multi-media hub.
  • Multi-skilling is critical to the smooth running of the Operations department in BBC South East, and you may have other skills that you bring to the team.
  • The role is based at the BBC South East studios in Tunbridge Wells.

Requirements

  • Experience of directing live television in a news environment and leading a multi-skilled team under tight time pressures.
  • Good communication skills, self-motivation, and the ability to work with others or alone.
  • Ability to work calmly under pressure and lead the team during live transmission to realise our editorial ambition.
  • Ability to respond to problems in a fast and effective way, whether it's a technical solution or a reorganisation of priorities due to unexpected changes in the news agenda.
  • Some experience of live news transmission systems is an advantage, although you will be trained on our system as part of the placement.
  • Aptitude and willingness to develop your own skills and learn new ones.
  • Active involvement in the training and development of others in the team as required, and an understanding of BBC Health & Safety policies.
