A Clinical Scientist position exists in the Nuclear Medicine group at The Christie NHS FT. The successful candidate will join a team of clinical scientists providing medical physics and radiation protection support for unsealed radioactive substances. The role offers opportunities to contribute to PET-CT and molecular radiotherapy services.
Main Duties- Provide day-to-day scientific support as duty physicist for diagnostic and therapeutic work in Nuclear Medicine.
- Develop and implement new nuclear medicine diagnostic techniques, including training technologists and radiographers.
- Write software for nuclear medicine image acquisition, analysis, and display of clinical studies.
- Perform advanced mathematical calculations for nuclear medicine imaging analysis techniques and clinical radiation dosimetry.
- Participate in quality assurance programs for critical nuclear medicine diagnostic equipment.
- Evaluate equipment specifications and performance prior to purchase, advising on equipment selection.
- Maintain nuclear medicine clinical image data archives.
- Coordinate the evaluation of new image processing techniques.
- Participate in quality assurance programs for radionuclide calibrators, including intercomparisons with the National Physical Laboratory.
- Provide day-to-day support for radiation protection requirements, ensuring compliance with legislation on radioactive materials in medicine.
- Liaise with ward and other staff regarding patient discharge and radioactive contamination monitoring.
- Supervise patient-radioactivity monitoring equipment and advise on restrictions for patients.
- Prepare risk assessments, local rules, and permits to work for Estates and other staff.
- Prepare patient information leaflets.
- Participate in research projects, including initiation, planning, and data analysis.
- Liaise with colleagues to maintain conformance with research governance.
- Communicate research results through publication and presentation.
- Teach and train in aspects of the work, including lecturing and facilitating practical experiments for PGDip/MSc students.
- Train nursing staff, clinical technologists, and radiographers.
- Supervise trainee Clinical Scientists undertaking projects in the department.
Maintain registration as a Clinical Scientist, participating in a CPD scheme according to Health and Care Professions Council rules.
