The Medical Laboratory Assistant position is based in the Clinical Pathology department at the Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust. Our team rotates to both the Queens Medical Centre and the Nottingham City Hospital.
Key Responsibilities- Provide support to the qualified Biomedical Scientist team in the Blood Transfusion and Haematology Laboratories.
- Perform laboratory pre-analytical techniques according to the department's Standard Operating Procedures.
- Follow laboratory processes for the referring of samples to external laboratories, using associated IT software where applicable.
- Be aware of and follow the systems and processes of the department's Quality Management System (QMS), interacting where appropriate via the QPulse system.
- Perform sample reception duties, including sample acceptance, receiving, sorting, labelling, bar coding, and racking of samples on arrival.
- Load samples onto automation.
- File, archive, and retrieve samples, dispatch samples to referral sites as appropriate.
- Perform clerical tasks, including data input of patient demographics and request details, and the filing, copying, and retrieval of request forms.
- Answer telephone enquiries and perform visitor reception duties.
- Perform general house-keeping duties, including safe disposal of waste, general cleaning, and tidying.
- Perform pre-analytical and track equipment cleaning, calibration, and maintenance in accordance with documented schedules.
- Maintain stocks of laboratory supplies, including ensuring adequate supplies of general laboratory items.
- GCSE or equivalent standard with passes at A-C or equivalent in English & Maths, or equivalent experience.
- Previous lab experience is desirable.
- IBMS Certificate of Achievement is desirable.
- Can demonstrate numeric and literacy skills in the context of interacting with IT systems, data entry, and using dashboards.
- A clear and well-written application form with relevant detail and evidence.
- Evidence of team work, time management skills, and problem-solving skills.
