Nurse Specialist in Oncology

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated A&E General Nurse to join our team at The Christie NHS Foundation Trust. As a key member of our ward team, you will be responsible for delivering high-quality patient care and contributing to the smooth operation of our department.
Job SummaryThe successful candidate will have a strong interest in oncology and a proven track record of delivering excellent nursing care. You will be responsible for ensuring that all prescribed drugs and treatments are given correctly and in accordance with Trust policy, including the correct care and custody of controlled drugs.
Main Responsibilities- Deliver high-quality patient care, ensuring that all patients receive the best possible treatment and support.
- Work collaboratively with the ward team to achieve and maintain a high standard of patient care.
- Take individual responsibility for the nursing care of a group of patients, as a registered nurse.
- Participate in the rehabilitation of patients and provide relatives with necessary instructions.
- Ensure that prescribed drugs and treatments are given correctly and in accordance with the Hospital Procedure and Policy, and work within NMC guidelines.
- Liaise with medical and para-medical personnel and community organisations.
- Participate in internal rotation to night duty as required.
- Provide a supportive role within the ward for nursing, medical and clerical staff.
- Give a clear and accurate update at change of duties and ensure accurate documentation of nursing interventions.
- Participate in the emergency/continuing care of patients and give any necessary instructions, including transfer information.
- Support and assist in the induction/training of junior staff/Health Care Assistants acting as mentor to designated staff.
- Be able to act as ward co-ordinator in absence of senior staff and ensure the safe and timely throughput of patients, liaising closely with admission staff, medical staff and other wards.
- Highlight areas of improvement/development within the department and undertake relevant projects.
- Participate in ward/unit/Trust initiatives.
- Act as support for other ward nurses in relation to acute emergency care.
- Assist in the general housekeeping duties of the ward.
- Help to maintain a safe environment and report faults/risks etc to the nurse in charge.
- Handle patients' personal possessions, and ensure cash and valuables kept securely as per policy.
- Correct care and custody of controlled drugs and aid the safe storage of medicines, in line with Trust Policies.
- Assist medical staff with procedures.
- Carry out certain procedures such as venepuncture, cannulation and the administration of Chemotherapy, and be prepared to learn new skills relevant to the role.
- Undertake training on Brachytherapy and Molecular Radiotherapy, when ready to do so.
- Cross cover other wards within unit to ensure adequate staff cover over both wards, when required.
- Complete the ward preceptor pack, and ward training packs.
- Complete Principles and Practice of Intravenous Skills Programme and Cannulation Skills Training and update regularly.
- Annually attend all mandatory study days as per Trust and unit guidance.
- Demonstrate a pleasant and approachable manner and help create and promote a good working relationship.
- Show professional and courteous manner when answering the telephone and other enquiries.
- Be aware of and adhere to all policies including sickness and absence, confidentiality, uniform and responsibilities under the Health and Safety at work act and be familiar with all risk assessments pertinent to the ward.
- Report and record all accidents and complaints according to the agreed policy.
- Adhere to trust uniform policy.
We are looking for a highly skilled and dedicated A&E General Nurse with a strong interest in oncology. The ideal candidate will have a Nursing Degree or Diploma with NMC and a willingness to undertake further study/training as required for the post.
Essential qualifications include:

- Post Graduate certificate in cancer care/oncology.
Essential experience includes:
- Experience or interest in caring for Oncology/Palliative care patients.
- Administration of Chemotherapy (IV).
- Ability to deliver high standard of nursing care.
- Basic computer literacy.
- Altered Airway Care.
Desirable experience includes:
- Care of patients receiving radiotherapy and chemotherapy.
- Altered Airway Care.
- Flexible shift pattern with rotation to night duty.
- Willingness to be involved with ward/unit/Trust initiatives.
