Role Responsibilities:

This 12-month position presents an opportunity to lead the development of Uswitch's reputation and expertise in a crucial sector that significantly affects household expenses - energy. You will join our award-winning team, recognized as PRCA's In-House PR Team of the Year 2023, dedicated to achieving extensive media coverage and influencing policymakers.

As UK households confront unprecedented challenges due to the ongoing cost of living crisis, we are committed to enhancing our efforts to support consumers.

You will advocate for change within the energy sector and empower consumers to manage their household expenses effectively.

This role is ideal for a seasoned PR professional with a strong understanding of the national media landscape, ready to take charge of our consumer-centric energy initiatives.

Key Duties:

  • Campaign Strategy: Develop and execute campaigns during pivotal moments that align with commercial, policy, or brand marketing goals. Identify innovative ways to engage target audiences, including collaboration with influencers. Coordinate with product and commercial teams to ensure alignment with business objectives.
  • Content Management: Secure prominent media coverage to support our energy messaging, including fixed deals, household energy savings, and policy priorities. Oversee internal data and external consumer research, craft high-quality press releases, and maintain an updated story pipeline shared with broader marketing teams. Collaborate closely with our Digital Earned Media and organic social media teams for integrated efforts.
  • Press Office Management: Deliver exceptional press office services, addressing inquiries during and outside office hours (typically only 1-2 times per month) and managing our media center. Represent the PR team confidently to internal and external stakeholders, including organizing spokesperson briefings and coordinating high-profile media interviews.
  • News Monitoring: Stay attuned to industry trends and daily news to identify opportunities for expert commentary that stands out in a competitive media landscape.
  • Media Relations: Cultivate, sustain, and optimize robust relationships with consumer affairs, energy, personal finance, lifestyle, trade, and broadcast media, as well as key industry influencers, including business partners.
  • Regulatory Communication: Collaborate with the policy and regulation team to provide PR support for our public affairs initiatives.
  • Spokesperson Development: Manage, coach, and prepare spokespeople, coordinating their schedules for press and broadcast interviews and video/podcast appearances.
  • Agency Coordination: Serve as the primary contact for our Energy PR agency, ensuring we maximize the value of our external partnerships.
  • Reporting and Analysis: Track all incoming media coverage, assess performance against competitors, manage relationships with news monitoring services, and report on outcomes.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Proven experience in consumer PR, particularly in relevant sectors (energy, utilities, personal finance), with exceptional communication skills. A proactive self-starter with a demonstrated history of creating and leading consumer campaigns that yield impactful results with minimal oversight.
  • Ability to comprehend our policy objectives and effectively convey them through PR messaging, transforming policy positions into compelling media narratives. Capable of simplifying complex topics into consumer-friendly language.
  • Proficient in managing priorities and making strategic decisions, including assessing whether a reactive media moment serves the best interests of consumers while balancing commercial and policy objectives.
  • Skilled in seizing reactive media opportunities and delivering accurate, newsworthy comments promptly, alongside creative thinking for proactive campaigns.
  • Strong writing abilities - capable of articulating messages in an engaging manner with meticulous attention to detail. Comfortable working with insights, data, and third-party consumer research to enhance our storytelling.
