Key Responsibilities:
- Performing radiological safety evaluations
- Evaluating radiation damage risks to electronic systems
- Designing and implementing radiation detection technologies
- Completing the engineering design for secondary shielding systems
- Conducting and interpreting point kernel and Monte Carlo simulations
- Providing expert guidance on the implications of modifications and defects
- Developing ALARP justifications to support engineering decisions
Required Skills and Experience:
Essential:
- Bachelor's degree in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Engineering, Nuclear Science, or a related discipline
- Proven knowledge and experience in radiation physics, nuclear engineering, or nuclear safety
- Experience with radiological safety evaluations and ALARP justifications
- Familiarity with radiation transport methodologies (e.g., ATTILLA, MCBEND, MCNP)
Desirable:
- Experience within the submarine sector
- Change management expertise
- Strong technical communication skills, both written and verbal

The Radiation Physics & Shielding Team: Our team is dedicated to the design and validation of radiation shielding for the UK's nuclear-powered submarine fleet. We are involved in multiple submarine programs at various stages of the engineering lifecycle, focusing on designing new shields, assessing design changes, and conducting radiation metrology during commissioning. In addition to our primary responsibilities, we perform radiological safety studies in other areas, develop innovative radiation detectors, and enhance our capabilities in radiation damage assessment for electronics.
