Position Overview

An exceptional opportunity has emerged within Northumbria Primary Care for a Band 4 Registered Pharmacy Specialist to become a vital part of the team, providing support to a network of GP practices within our North Northumberland region. The selected individual will collaborate closely with both clinical and administrative staff to manage a diverse array of medication-related responsibilities.

The Pharmacy Specialist role represents a novel initiative within NPC, where the successful candidate will play a key role in implementing a thorough primary care medicines management framework, adhering to the latest best practices. This position will primarily involve activities within the practice, while also requiring adaptability to meet the broader needs of the network.

Key Responsibilities

This role will enhance the efficient and effective distribution of medications to patients, including managing discharge summary medication alterations, communicating with care facilities regarding prescription inquiries, and aiding the organization in transitioning towards digital prescription services. Familiarity with primary care operations and the SystmOne system would be beneficial, though not mandatory.

About Northumbria Primary Care

Northumbria Primary Care Ltd (NPC) is an innovative partnership with local General Practitioners, currently overseeing several GP practices that serve approximately 50,000 registered patients in the Northumberland and North Tyneside areas.

Appointees will have a designated base site within NPC, as we recognize that continuity and teamwork are essential for effective primary care delivery. As a large multi-site organization, we offer cross-site support and the flexibility to work across various practices. Additionally, we provide opportunities for evening and weekend shifts, further enhancing flexible working arrangements. It is important to note that NPC operates as a wholly owned subsidiary of Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust.

Job Duties

- Collaborate under the supervision of the Clinical Pharmacy team to establish a comprehensive medicines management hub within a primary care environment, ensuring a safe and efficient service is upheld, which includes activities such as medicines reconciliation and processing repeat prescription requests.

- Engage with pharmacy personnel across all sectors and other healthcare professionals to guarantee a patient-centered medicines management service, conducting medication reviews for patients identified by the broader multidisciplinary team or through other medicines management initiatives.

- Work in close partnership with the Clinical Pharmacist to foster a team-oriented approach to medicines management, serving as a crucial member of both the multidisciplinary team and the wider pharmacy team, while providing medicines management guidance to healthcare professionals, patients, and caregivers.

- Collaborate with the Clinical Pharmacist to design and execute medicines management audits, facilitating discussions within the practice and determining subsequent actions.

- Exemplify compassionate and inclusive leadership to cultivate a collective leadership culture within Northumbria Primary Care. This entails demonstrating a consistent leadership style that (a) engages, enables, and empowers others, (b) utilizes coaching to promote ownership of learning and quality enhancement, and (c) fosters teamwork and collaboration within teams and across organizational boundaries.

Qualifications

Essential Requirements

  • BTEC in pharmaceutical science or NVQ Level 3, supported by relevant foundational knowledge, national certificate in Pharmaceutical Sciences, or an equivalent qualification.
  • Registered as a Pharmacy Technician with the General Pharmaceutical Council.
  • Commitment to completing the CPPE Primary Care Pharmacy Education Programme for Pharmacy Technicians once competency criteria are met and a training opportunity arises, with an expectation to achieve this within 24 months of appointment. Upon completion, the individual will be equipped to identify when and to whom to refer any issues, maintaining a duty of care to ensure their work meets the required standards as outlined in departmental standard operating procedures.
  • Evidence of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) demonstrating that their knowledge and training are current.

Desirable Attributes

  • Previous relevant experience in a Pharmacy setting.
  • Understanding of the operations of Pharmacy Services.
