In the role of Lead Nurse, you will oversee and guide the inpatient unit during your scheduled shifts, playing a crucial role in providing outstanding care to our patients and their families.
Key Responsibilities
- Assume responsibility for being the nurse in charge, conducting comprehensive nursing assessments, and developing tailored care plans for patients while managing dynamic situations and leading the shift effectively.
- Delegate tasks to team members, ensuring that nursing care is executed to the highest standards and aligns with patient needs.
- Lead and inspire the inpatient team, fostering a positive and inclusive workplace culture.
- Involve family members and caregivers in the care process whenever possible, ensuring their participation is safe and welcomed.
- Maintain confidentiality at all times.
- Utilize your skills to assess and interpret patient conditions, taking appropriate actions as necessary.
- Collaborate with other healthcare professionals within primary and secondary care settings regarding patient care as needed.
- Adhere to the medicines management policy and ensure compliance.
- Advocate for patients, children, and young people at all times.
- Provide support to families and caregivers before and after a patient's passing, coordinating with other agencies when appropriate.
- Exhibit expertise in communication, often leading discussions with distressed patients and relatives while offering guidance and support to the broader team.
- Assist medical personnel in supporting patients during consultations and managing their care.
- Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate specialized palliative clinical care for patients.
- Participate in the training and education of both professional and non-professional staff.
- Mentor students from educational institutions during their clinical placements.
- Be prepared for exposure to various circumstances, including bodily fluids and challenging situations.
- Collaborate as part of a team supporting community hospice services and patients in need.
- Make informed decisions appropriate to your level of responsibility and justify the management of complex priorities during shifts.
- Escalate concerns to the Ward Manager, Matron, or designated senior nurse when decisions fall outside your scope of responsibility.
- Participate in complex moving and handling scenarios for patients with additional needs, utilizing specialized equipment and hoists.
- Lead shifts that may last up to 13 hours, including day, night, and weekend work.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date patient records.
- Step in for the Ward Manager in their absence, with support from the IPU Matron.
Required Skills & Experience
Essential Qualifications
- Proficient IT skills.
- First level Degree or Diploma in Nursing.
- Current registration with the NMC.
- Post-registration education and training up to Post Graduate Diploma level or equivalent in management or palliative care.
- Experience in team management.
Desirable Qualifications
- Leadership qualifications and course attendance.
- Experience in the charity sector.
