ORGANIZATION OVERVIEW
Healthcare Central London (HCL) operates as the GP Federation for the Central London borough area, providing support to 33 General Practices and 4 Primary Care Networks (PCNs). The organization manages various NHS contracts, including a Care Navigation Service, Clinical Pharmacy Service, Community Dermatology Service, and Partnership in Practice (PiP), which is sub-contracted to its member General Practices.
Our mission is to be recognized as a premier GP provider network, driven by clinicians for the benefit of our local community. We aim to sustain and maintain the independence of general practice through collaboration with patients and partners.
Our strategy focuses on delivering exceptional support to our 33 General Practice members while managing NHS contracts in a way that benefits both Practices and their patients by providing services that are economical, local, prompt, and familiar.
ROLE SUMMARY
The Pharmacy Technician will play a crucial role in supporting the Clinical Pharmacy team's medication management initiatives, ensuring a safe, efficient, and consistently effective model of care within General Practice. This includes assisting a cluster of GP practices.
The primary objective of this position is to lead enhancements that maximize safe and cost-effective prescribing practices, thereby improving the quality of patient care. The post holder will assist patients in optimizing their medication regimens by adhering to established protocols, enhancing repeat prescribing processes, promoting repeat dispensing and online ordering, minimizing clinical risks, and reducing medication waste.
Additionally, the post holder will foster a deeper understanding of medicines optimization principles among practice teams and advocate for best practices in alignment with therapeutic advancements.
This role will involve collaboration with the GP Federation to meet national standards, implement NICE guidelines, and utilize medicines optimization initiatives. We provide a supportive environment where our Clinical Pharmacist Team collaborates closely to enhance patient care and experience.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
• Assist the Clinical Pharmacist at the PCN level in delivering effective medicines management within the general practice framework.
• Execute pharmacy-related components of the Network DES, focusing on medicines optimization.
• Conduct medication switches in GP practices according to established protocols, including reviewing and updating patient records.
• Perform record maintenance tasks such as dose optimization and medication synchronization.
• Enhance prescribing processes within general practice.
• Promote electronic repeat dispensing and online ordering.
• Report on key performance indicators to demonstrate the added value of pharmacy services in accordance with NICE guidance.
• Utilize and maintain relevant information systems and databases, including incident reporting and patient outcomes.
• Collaborate closely with GP practices and Senior Clinical Pharmacists.
• Participate in practice meetings and patient engagement groups to promote the pharmacy technician role and relevant prescribing issues.
• Liaise with other pharmacy stakeholders, including ICB Pharmacy teams and community pharmacy.
• Support the Medicines Optimisation strategy and its implementation.
• Handle sensitive and complex information in compliance with the Data Protection Act and organizational confidentiality policies.
• Organize and manage personal workload to meet deadlines.
• Conduct prescribing audits using SystmOne, the GP practice clinical system.
• Engage in clinical audits to facilitate improvements in practice.
• Ensure timely action on major MHRA drug alerts as instructed by the ICB Pharmacist.
• Monitor prescribing expenditures at the practice level and suggest adjustments to stay within budget.
• Participate in ongoing learning and development to maintain required knowledge and skills.
• Undertake additional duties as required, in line with the skills and competencies of the role.
• Manage tasks related to COVID-19 vaccine logistics, including ordering and record-keeping.
• Promote a culture of equality and diversity, adhering to organizational policies.
• Uphold principles of openness, transparency, and candor in all practices.
• Acquire necessary safeguarding knowledge and skills through training provided by the organization.
• Report any infection prevention and control issues to the line manager.
KEY WORKING RELATIONSHIPS
The post holder will be expected to maintain constructive relationships with a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders, including General Practice, the Clinical Pharmacy Team, and the Central London division of North West London ICB, while participating in relevant working groups and initiatives to enhance the role and service within Central London.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
Registration: Mandatory registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC).
Education / Training / Qualifications: GPhC-accredited course, GPhC-recognized qualifications, or GPhC-approved apprenticeship pathways.
Knowledge and Experience: Recent experience in a comparable role within General Practice, including patient-facing responsibilities and familiarity with prescribing/clinical systems such as SystmOne.
Skills / Abilities: Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written; strong IT and organizational skills; ability to work under pressure; teamwork capability; and proficiency in managing pharmaceutical care programs.
Interpersonal Skills: Strong interpersonal, influencing, and negotiating skills; ability to communicate complex information clearly to diverse audiences.
