Job Title: Lead Software Architect

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Lead Software Architect to join our team at IUCN. As a key member of our Conservation Informatics team, you will be responsible for leading the technical development of our next-generation Species Information Service (SIS) platform.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Architectural Leadership: Define the overall architecture of software products, including technology stack, integration patterns, and deployment strategies.
  • Team Management: Hire, lead, mentor, and manage an engineering team, fostering a collaborative and innovative environment.
  • Technical Strategy and Planning: Develop and communicate a clear technical vision and roadmap for managed software products.
  • Project Management: Oversee the technical aspects of the project lifecycle, ensuring timely delivery, budget, and quality standards.
  • System Design and Implementation: Lead the design and implementation of key system components, ensuring robustness, scalability, and security.
  • Quality Assurance: Implement and maintain rigorous testing and quality assurance processes to ensure reliability and performance.
  • Innovation and Continuous Improvement: Stay up-to-date with emerging technologies and industry trends, integrating relevant advancements into software products.
  • Documentation and Training: Ensure comprehensive documentation of system architecture, design decisions, and operational procedures.
  • Compliance and Security: Ensure software compliance with regulatory requirements and industry standards, implementing robust security measures to protect data integrity and privacy.
Requirements:
  • Undergraduate degree or equivalent work experience in computer science, software engineering, information systems, or a related field.
  • 10+ years of software development experience in Ruby on Rails, with significant depth in designing, implementing, and managing critical projects using cloud-based technologies.
  • 3+ years in a software team leadership position in an Agile or Shape Up environment.
  • Experience working in a commercial software development team at all levels, with a deep understanding and empathy of the nuances of each role.
  • Highly competent with the use of Unix-based operating systems.
  • Experience in developing APIs in Ruby on Rails.
  • Experience in JavaScript and modern frontend frameworks.
  • Experience with updating software and databases on Unix-based systems while retaining service continuity.
  • Experience with popular database technologies, particularly PostgreSQL.
  • Continuous integration and deployment experience.
  • Experience working with Digital Ocean, Linode, AWS, Heroku, or similar cloud service providers.
  • Experience working with UI/UX teams.
  • Excellent communication, writing, and presentation skills.
  • Fluency in spoken and written English.
