About the Role

The House of Commons is seeking a highly experienced and skilled legal professional to join its Office of Speaker's Counsel as a Deputy Counsel. This is a senior position in the General Advice team, responsible for providing legal advice to the Speaker, the Clerk of the House, and other stakeholders.

The successful candidate will have a strong background in legal practice, with expertise in interpreting and applying data protection legislation. They will also have excellent written communication skills, with the ability to set out advice clearly and authoritatively to Members, staff, and external bodies.

The role will involve advising on a wide range of legal matters, including data protection, information law, safeguarding issues, and parliamentary privilege. The successful candidate will also be responsible for supporting the Restoration and Renewal project and providing legal advice to the House of Commons Safeguarding Board.

To be successful in this role, you will need to demonstrate a strong understanding of the law of England and Wales, as well as excellent research and analytical skills. You will also need to be able to work effectively in a team and communicate complex legal information to non-legal stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide legal advice to the Speaker, the Clerk of the House, and other stakeholders on a wide range of legal matters.
  • Advise on the application of data protection legislation in the Parliamentary context.
  • Support the Restoration and Renewal project and provide legal advice to the House of Commons Safeguarding Board.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including Members of Parliament, their staff, and external bodies.

Requirements

  • Substantial experience of legal practice, including expertise in interpreting and applying data protection legislation.
  • Excellent written communication skills, with the ability to set out advice clearly and authoritatively to Members, staff, and external bodies.
  • Strong research and analytical skills, with the ability to identify and analyze complex legal issues.
  • Solicitor or barrister qualified in England and Wales.
