London, Greater London, United Kingdom Canal & River Trust Full time

Job Purpose

Job Title: M&E Technician

Advertised Salary: £30,000 - £34,500 (depending on experience) + Inner London Allowance (£4,000) + benefits.

Location: Remote, with regular travel across our London & South East network.

The Canal & River Trust is a prominent charity in the UK, dedicated to the upkeep of 2,000 miles of historic waterways, including canals, rivers, docks, and reservoirs. We also manage museums, archives, and a significant collection of protected historic buildings, ensuring their preservation for future generations. Our waterways are dynamic and engaging environments for work, featuring numerous mechanically and electrically operated structures such as bridges and locks. We integrate modern technology with our historic assets to enhance their longevity, including systems for water movement, hydraulic operations, and mechanical/electrical actuators for sluices, bridges, and locks.

As a Mechanical & Electrical Technician, you will leverage your technical skills to execute maintenance and repair tasks on M&E structures, machinery, and equipment, thereby safeguarding and enhancing the reputation of our network as a valued national resource while delivering exceptional customer service.

Our L&SE maintenance team is seeking a qualified M&E engineer to support maintenance activities on electrical and mechanical assets, particularly focusing on hydraulic systems. As a team committed to Health and Safety, we require an individual capable of isolating power supplies/control panels, diagnosing faults within 400v/230v/24v systems, and resolving any issues that arise. Many of our M&E Technicians work independently, so we need someone with the necessary qualifications to perform such tasks legally and safely.

Ideally, you will be well-versed in mechanical and electrical isolation techniques for safe operations and possess the ability to troubleshoot methodically without assistance. The ideal candidate will receive appropriate training to support their ongoing development in the role and will be provided with a nurturing environment to adapt to our unique infrastructure.

Location & Coverage

Reporting to base at London Docklands, the area covered will include various assets throughout the London region, from Brentford on the Grand Union in the West to Limehouse on the Regents, including the Docklands area and the Olympic Park to the East, extending to assets along the River Lee & Stort to the North of London.

Occasionally, you may also be required to work in other areas.

Residing near these locations will be essential to accommodate regular travel along the L&SE canal/river networks.

Knowledge, Skills/Qualifications & Experience

This role supports Canal & River Trust's objectives to enhance safety and increase public engagement with the inland waterways network. Your expertise will be instrumental in maintaining our waterways infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities:

Ensure safety in all activities and contribute to a safe working environment. When necessary, oversee volunteers in the execution of works to ensure completion to the required quality while maintaining volunteer satisfaction. Support the delivery of a program of M&E maintenance and repair works, by staff and contractors as needed, ensuring the waterway infrastructure is well-maintained and maximizing customer satisfaction. Provide mechanical and electrical assistance to resolve issues as they arise. Participate in the On Call Rota to support assets outside of regular hours/weekends to uphold customer service standards. Under supervision, propose solutions to minor problems and undertake minor design modifications where appropriate. Deliver first-level response for reactive works, ensuring customer safety and network availability. Work to a planned schedule, including inspections, monitoring, and reporting on the condition of M&E assets. Provide customer service through the operation of the Trust's assets in a safe and timely manner, addressing customer inquiries to enhance satisfaction. Consistently embody the Trust's values and behaviors.

About You:

This role is suited for an Electrical Engineer/Technician/Operative with experience and knowledge in mechanical engineering, ideally from the water industry, factory production lines, or manufacturing processes involving fault finding in wiring systems of 400/230/24 volts. We prioritize resolving issues promptly and trust you to make critical decisions to ensure compliance and functionality of equipment.

If you have experience in diagnosing and repairing various electrical and/or mechanical assets, you may be a good fit for this position. We welcome Technicians with valuable experience, particularly those who have worked with water plants, pumps, sewage systems, hydraulic machinery, production lines, traffic control systems, packaging equipment, elevators, escalators, automated gate systems, or heating control systems.

Preferred Qualifications and Attainments:

C&G2391/2 or equivalent for testing and inspection of electrical installations. C&G BS7671 18th edition wiring regulations preferred. NVQ3/C&G in an Electrical Discipline or Apprentice trained multi-skilled maintenance engineer. Short courses in specific mechanical or electrical disciplines are advantageous.

Work Experience:

A minimum of 3+ years' experience as an Electrical Engineer/Technician/Operative is essential, with experience in mechanical engineering or a related field being highly desirable. Proven experience as a multi-skilled engineer is highly advantageous. Experience with hydraulic systems and fault finding is a plus. Essential experience with electrical control panel diagnostics. Apprentice trained multi-skilled maintenance engineer is highly desirable.

Skills:

Familiarity with modern computerized planned maintenance systems. Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Valid driving license.

Safety:

Adhere to Canal & River Trust Health & Safety policies and standards, report incidents, accidents, and near misses. Assess risks and adjust work methods as necessary. Ensure all equipment (PPE, plant, materials, etc.) is suitable for the task. Be mindful of personal and others' behavior.

Safeguarding:

Be aware of your responsibilities regarding safeguarding and support our commitment to providing safe environments and practices that promote and protect the safety and welfare of colleagues and visitors.
