Job Summary

This is an exciting opportunity for a Senior Clinical Scientist to join our team at Synnovis Analytics, working in the Metabolic Biochemistry and Newborn Screening laboratories. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for the development and delivery of mass spectrometry and chromatography-based techniques, as well as FTIR and RT-PCR, to aid screening, diagnosis, and monitoring of genetic diseases in metabolic pathways.

Main Duties
  • Participate in the Metabolic and NBS Duty Scientist rotas and attend Metabolic multi-disciplinary team meetings
  • Interpret and report complex metabolic results, including organic acids, amino acids, acylcarnitines, very long chain fatty acids, purines/pyrimidines, and renal stones
  • Authorise NBS results and participate in the weekend NBS rota
  • Undertake manual routine assays in the lab, as required, following documented standard operating procedures
  • Use the Quality Management System, including identifying, recording, and troubleshooting errors, writing and reviewing documentation, and participating in the departmental audit schedule
  • Review or IQC and EQA results, including participation in interpretative metabolic EQA schemes
  • Help identify and troubleshoot analytical and clinical issues as they arise
  • Train and teach work experience students, clinical colleagues, visitors to the department, and STP trainees completing their metabolic rotation
  • Ensure compliance with good work practices, in accordance with UKAS (ISO and the UKNSPC National Newborn Screening Programme Standards

We deliver and transform pathology services across South East London, providing diagnostics, testing, and digital pathology for hospital trusts, GP services, and other healthcare providers.

Person Specification
  • Essential qualifications: BSc in Biochemistry or related subject, MSc in Clinical Biochemistry, State Registered Clinical Scientist (Health and Care Professions Council)
  • Desirable qualifications: FRCPath (part 1), PhD in Biochemistry, Chemistry, or related subject
  • Essential experience: Experience of working in a Clinical Biochemistry department, including interpretation and validation of patient results, manual sample preparation techniques, method development and validation
  • Desirable experience: Experience of working in Metabolic Biochemistry and/or Newborn Screening laboratories, routine use of LC-MS/MS or other chromatographic techniques, teaching/training of scientific, medical, and technical staff
  • Essential skills and knowledge: Organisational skills, understanding of analytical techniques, including undertaking complex analytical procedures, proven ability to work under pressure, written and verbal communication of technical information and results with clinical and scientific staff of all grades
  • Desirable skills and knowledge: Knowledge of the UKAS standard and its application in a clinical laboratory
