Job Responsibilities
This recruitment is for the Pine Chapel Area Headquarters, focusing on the operations supporting the Hampton Roads Harbor Tunnel (HRHT). We are looking for individuals who can effectively manage power tools and heavy machinery, including chain saws, trimming and chipping machines, dump trucks, loaders, backhoes, motor graders, and tractors with attachments. As a maintenance operator, your responsibilities will include:
- Responding to emergency roadway situations and severe weather events, preparing and operating equipment for snow and ice removal, as well as addressing hazardous road conditions.
- Participating in work zone training, setting up work zones, and conducting traffic control measures.
- Implementing proper work site protection techniques: identifying workplace safety hazards, suggesting improvements, wearing appropriate personal protective equipment, and staying updated on safety regulations and equipment usage.
- Working collaboratively as part of a team to perform manual labor tasks such as clearing drainage, cutting brush, patching potholes, and completing road maintenance projects.
- Conducting pre-trip inspections, performing preventive maintenance, and operating a variety of power tools and equipment.
Minimum Qualifications
- Knowledge of highway maintenance equipment, materials, methods, and procedures.
- Ability to operate and maintain equipment similar to that used in highway maintenance and construction activities.
- Capability to perform heavy manual labor.
- Ability to read and follow both oral and written instructions; effective communication skills.
- Proficiency in operating and maintaining handheld and power tools.
- Experience with light, medium, and heavy-duty equipment used for highway maintenance and repair.
- Willingness to obtain a CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain compliance thereafter.
- Ability to work in adverse weather conditions and respond to emergencies during and after regular work hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Safety shoes are mandatory.
Additional Considerations
- Possession of a valid CDL with appropriate endorsements.
- Experience in heavy manual labor and operating equipment such as dump trucks, tractors, and loaders.
- Experience in performing basic preventive maintenance and minor repairs on equipment.
- Familiarity with methods and materials used in highway maintenance.
- Experience in emergency operations, including snow removal and accident clean-up.
- A high school diploma or GED is preferred; equivalent experience or training may substitute for education.
- Flagging certification is a plus.
