Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Bereavement Support Officer to join our team at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. As a Bereavement Support Officer, you will play a vital role in providing administrative support and patient liaison services to bereaved families and individuals.

Main Responsibilities
  • Provide administrative support to the Bereavement Office, including data input, photocopying, filing, and letter writing.
  • Act as the first point of contact for internal and external stakeholders regarding deceased patients, providing information and support as needed.
  • Communicate with distressed or potentially aggressive relatives and family members in a professional, courteous, and sensitive manner, using tact, empathy, and diplomacy to resolve issues.
  • Conduct meetings with recently bereaved individuals, providing information booklets, advice, support, and guidance on death registration, funeral arrangements, and other related matters.
  • Ensure that all deceased patients' property is properly documented and stored in accordance with departmental guidelines and processes.
  • Respond sensitively and empathetically to queries and complaints from members of the public, funeral directors, and bereaved families, escalating issues to the manager as needed.
  • Ensure that office telephones are answered promptly, and enquiries are dealt with in a polite and courteous manner.

Requirements
  • 5 or more GCSEs or equivalent, including English Language and Mathematics (C/4 grade or above)
  • NVQ Level 3 in Business Administration, Customer Service, or IT, or equivalent experience
  • Experience working in a busy office environment and with an understanding of administrative and clerical procedures
  • Experience of direct work with the general public, especially in highly distressing and emotional circumstances
  • Demonstrable experience in a similar role
  • Able to manage personal and professional boundaries, work independently, and maintain confidentiality at all times
Desirable Qualifications and Experience
  • IT qualification, such as European Computer Driving Licence or Microsoft Office
  • Relevant experience within the NHS
  • Working knowledge of hospital procedures and policies relating to death and bereavement
  • Sound knowledge and understanding of bereavement procedures for different cultures and religions
  • Experience of handling emotionally challenging situations, such as liaising with bereaved families
