Position Overview

We are looking for a committed legal practitioner to become a part of our supportive Community Care and Court of Protection team. You will report directly to the Senior Associate and handle a varied caseload of privately paying clients. Your role will also involve mentoring junior legal staff and playing a part in the growth of our specialized legal practice. Our team is recognized in Chambers and The Legal 500, and we pride ourselves on providing comprehensive advice in areas such as Community Care/Public Law, Court of Protection Health and Welfare, and Special Educational Needs.

Clientele

Our clients include a diverse array of individuals and organizations. This encompasses the Court of Protection team and Professional Deputies across the country, as well as various private clients such as parents, young adults with capacity, families, lay attorneys, lay deputies, professional trustees, case managers, litigators, and charitable organizations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage a diverse caseload of Community Care and Court of Protection cases under the guidance of senior fee earners. Depending on your legal background, there may be opportunities to engage with Special Educational Needs cases.
  • Assist in marketing initiatives and contribute to business development efforts.
  • Support the Court of Protection Property & Affairs team with Community Care/Public Law and Court of Protection matters.
  • Handle inquiries from lay clients and Professional Deputies, including responding to quotation requests.
  • Draft a variety of complex legal documents, including advice letters, grounds of appeal, formal complaints, instructions to experts and counsel, court forms, applications, position statements, and witness statements.
  • Participate in advocacy at needs assessments, dispute resolution meetings, statutory appeals, and court or tribunal hearings.
  • Engage with clients, experts, public bodies, counsel, and the Court.
  • Oversee the preparation of documentation by junior fee earners and support staff.
  • Assist in the training and supervision of junior fee earners and support staff as needed.
  • Ensure that all work is maintained to a high standard to uphold the firm’s reputation.
  • Assist in managing fee estimates, invoicing, and accounting processes.

Essential Qualifications and Skills

  • Experience in Community Care/Public Law and Court of Protection Health & Welfare.
  • Ability to independently manage a mixed caseload of privately paying clients under senior supervision.
  • Effective teamwork skills.
  • Strong client care and interpersonal abilities.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficient IT skills, including a solid understanding of Microsoft Office (particularly Excel).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in Court of Protection Property & Affairs.
  • Knowledge of Special Educational Needs law.
  • Advocacy experience (e.g., NHS Continuing Healthcare appeals, round-table/ADR meetings).
  • Experience in training and supervising junior fee earners and support staff.
