Position Overview
Are you dedicated to providing exceptional care during the maternity journey? At Northampton General Hospital, we are committed to delivering outstanding maternity services.
Our maternity facilities encompass:
- A contemporary Birth Centre featuring three beds and birthing pools, along with eight postnatal accommodations.
- A ten-bed consultant-led Labour Ward equipped with a birthing pool.
- A specialized Obstetric theatre with recovery facilities.
- A 15-bed Maternity Higher Observation Ward.
- A serene Bereavement Suite with a garden.
- A Maternity Day Unit, Outpatient Clinic, and Midwifery-led Sonography services.
- A 17-bed ward for inpatient antenatal and postnatal mothers and their infants.
- A six-bed Transitional Care Ward designed to minimize the separation of mothers and their babies.
Our Community Midwifery Services have been recognized with the Royal College of Midwives (RCM) Award for Excellence in Care During a Global Pandemic in 2021, as well as the Race Matters RCM Award in the same year.

Key Responsibilities
The primary function of the Perinatal Care Assistant (PCA) is to support and collaborate with midwives and the broader multidisciplinary team, ensuring a safe and comprehensive approach to woman-centered care.
While the midwife retains ultimate responsibility for the care of mothers and their newborns, the PCA will assist in delivering clinical care under the direct or indirect supervision of the midwife, following the completion of relevant training.
This role involves rotation through various clinical settings, including antenatal inpatient and outpatient care, intrapartum inpatient care, and postnatal inpatient and outpatient care.

Job Duties
Main Responsibilities
- Demonstrate an understanding of the significance of partnering with women and their families, fostering positive relationships, supporting informed decision-making, and respecting the wishes of women and their families, especially during critical situations.
- Understand the PCA's scope of practice and the importance of the role within the national framework, enabling work within the limits of competence and authority, while escalating concerns to the multidisciplinary team for informed care planning.
Administrative Responsibilities
- Ensure all clinical documentation, whether written or electronic, is accurately and confidentially collected, updated, stored, and filed in accordance with local information governance policies.
- Provide administrative support to the maternity team in both hospital and community settings.
- Participate in tracking, obtaining, and filing clinical records as required by local policies.
Professional Conduct and Responsibilities
- Exhibit an approachable and professional demeanor towards all mothers and their families, demonstrating awareness of discriminatory attitudes and challenging such behavior to promote equality.
- Maintain knowledge of local safeguarding policies and procedures.
- Be vigilant regarding Child Protection issues and refer concerns to the registered midwife in a timely manner, adhering to legal requirements.
Training and Development
- Attend all mandatory training sessions as required.
- Identify personal training and development needs and pursue appropriate educational opportunities to maintain a current knowledge base and skill set.
- Engage in the annual performance review process to set objectives, monitor performance, and discuss personal development needs.
- Act as a role model and participate in training for colleagues, recognizing the impact of personal behavior on departmental culture and the experience of service users.
Creating a Safe Environment
- Familiarize oneself with local infection control policies and hazardous substances protocols, ensuring compliance at all times.
- Act responsibly regarding colleagues' health, safety, and welfare, adhering to safety practices, including lone working, in accordance with local health and safety policies.
- Ensure cleanliness of equipment in all clinical and non-clinical areas, assisting midwives in preparing the birthing environment.
- Maintain adequate stock levels in clinical settings and report any shortages promptly.
- Assist in the maintenance and cleanliness of home birth team equipment as needed.
- Report any equipment concerns or faults in a timely manner.
- Utilize the local risk management reporting system to report incidents or concerns promptly.
- Participate in auditing standards within the unit as appropriate.
Care for Women
- Effectively manage time and caseload while prioritizing care needs for women and their babies under the direction of the midwife in various settings.
- Escort women and their families between clinical areas as necessary.
- Assist with the admission, orientation, and discharge of women and their babies in accordance with local policies.
- Communicate effectively with women and their families, adapting methods as needed for those with disabilities or complexities.
- Ensure valid consent is obtained prior to providing care.
- Conduct baseline observations and measurements, escalating any deviations to the midwife or appropriate team member.
- Support women during clinical procedures and act as a chaperone when requested.
- Provide assistance to women in labor under the supervision of the midwife, which may include applying TENS machines or teaching breathing and massage techniques.
- Perform venepuncture or capillary blood sampling in accordance with national standards and local policies after completing the necessary competencies.
- Assist with bladder care, removal of catheters, and documentation of fluid balance.
- Support women's nutritional and hydration needs.
- Assist women with mobility following surgical procedures and removal of dressings or cannulas under midwife direction.
- Help transport blood products as needed, being aware of storage requirements.
Obstetric and Neonatal Emergencies
- Assist in obstetric theatres, including supporting the midwife in preparing women for transfer to theatre, documenting times and personnel present, undertaking WHO checklists, and counting swabs and needles during deliveries.
- Recognize and respond to abnormal events or emergencies within the PCA's competence, escalating concerns to the multidisciplinary team promptly.
- Assist the midwife with neonatal resuscitation as required, including collecting and passing equipment.
Health Promotion and Screening
- Maintain current knowledge of local and national antenatal and newborn screening services, guiding women and their families to qualified practitioners as needed.
- Understand and advise families on newborn blood spot screening, immunizations, and GROW Charts after completing the necessary competencies.
- Promote behavior changes in health promotion activities, including diet, hygiene, exercise, and smoking cessation.
- Complete relevant documentation for screening tests performed in maternity records.
- Recognize deterioration in mental and emotional wellbeing and respond appropriately, escalating concerns to the midwife.
- Be aware of and understand current policies and service frameworks for mental health.
- Recognize perinatal mental health issues and understand the referral pathways, escalating concerns to the multidisciplinary team as needed.
Infant Feeding
- Understand the components of human milk and their functions, including colostrum and mature breastmilk.
- Appreciate the significance of breastfeeding for improving health outcomes for infants and their families.
- Comprehend the anatomy and physiology of lactation and the hormonal influences on milk production.
- Describe key practices that facilitate breastfeeding initiation and support mothers in overcoming challenges.
- Support parents who formula feed, ensuring safety and minimizing risks.
- Promote skin-to-skin contact to support infant feeding and responsive feeding practices.
- Understand attachment principles and effective positioning for breastfeeding.
- Recognize the importance of secure mother-infant attachment for health and emotional wellbeing.
- Understand the WHO International Code of Marketing of Breastmilk Substitutes and its implications for practice.
Qualifications and Skills
