About the Role

The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust is a leading healthcare provider in the West Midlands, committed to delivering high-quality patient care and innovative services. We are seeking an experienced and skilled Specialist Biomedical Scientist to support the delivery of high-quality patient care through the provision of accurate and reliable test results.

Key Responsibilities
  • Act as a deputy for the POCT Manager and assist with the planning, coordination, and organisation of the overall workload.
  • Supervise lower-grade staff within the department and allocate daily work as required.
  • Assist with the procurement and implementation of new POCT equipment, including change control processes, validation, and training.
  • Monitor the performance of POCT equipment and end users using internal and external quality controls and audits.
  • Configure, install, use, maintain, and troubleshoot POCT equipment and associated software.
  • Ensure accurate records of equipment downtime and obtain credit notes or refunds for faulty consumables.
  • Use POCT software to manage equipment and users, monitor and trend equipment issues, and monitor and trend end-user compliance with policies and procedures.
  • Perform regular audits to ensure correct results are being transferred into the correct patient files.
  • Be responsible for the maintenance of IT systems, including POCT interfaces and connectivity software, and produce regular reports using this software.
  • Use POCT software to review and validate POCT results, ensuring results are suitable for release into the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
  • Ensure faulty equipment is returned to the manufacturer when necessary, following set protocols.
  • Assist in the monitoring, ordering, and storage of POCT consumables.
  • Ensure stock levels of POCT consumables on the wards are sufficient and maintain accurate records of stock deliveries.
  • Analyse quality control samples and patient samples on POCT equipment as required.
  • Reconstitute quality control material accurately to ensure quality control samples are prepared correctly.
  • Answer telephone enquiries regarding POCT equipment and communicate professionally with clinical users and other health professionals.
  • Carry out the safe, accurate, and precise handling of POCT equipment, reagents, and samples.
  • Contribute to the production, review, and update of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Utilise QPulse for document management, auditing, and other purposes.
  • Assist in ensuring the POCT department is compliant with the requirements of ISO, MHRA, and other relevant standards.
  • Assist in ensuring that training and competency assessments for all POCT equipment users are recorded and stored according to departmental procedures.
  • Learn and maintain knowledge of POCT devices to provide advice to service users.
  • Assist in dealing with product alerts and recalls.
  • Assist in risk assessments, report incidents, accidents, and adverse events.
  • Provide laboratory support for clinical trials.
Person Specification

We are looking for a highly skilled and experienced Specialist Biomedical Scientist with the following qualifications and skills:

  • BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science or equivalent.
  • State registration as a Biomedical Scientist with the Health Professions Council.
  • IBMS Specialist Diploma or equivalent CPSM log book.
  • Laboratory experience as a specialist BMS.
  • Experience of working as part of a team.
  • Experience of Point of Care Testing.
  • Experience of performing audits.
  • Experience of writing and reviewing Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Experience of supervising staff.
  • Experience of face-to-face training of staff.
  • Ability to work hours flexibly.
  • Willingness to work across all sites.
  • Driving Licence.
