About NHS Scotland
NHS Scotland is dedicated to promoting equality and diversity within our workforce, ensuring that all employees feel valued and empowered to perform at their best. We encourage applications from all segments of society.
Department Overview
The position is based within the Department of Medical Physics, with the specific base to be determined with the successful candidate.
Position Title: Clinical Engineer (Clinical Engineering / Medical Equipment Management)
Contract Type: Permanent, full-time (37 hours/week); 1 vacancy available.
Salary Range: Band 7 or Band 7 Annex 21 (dependent on experience)
We invite applications for the role of Clinical Engineer within the Clinical Engineering/Medical Equipment Management (MEM) Service at NHS Lothian. This role presents an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic team.
The Department of Medical Physics is tasked with the safe integration of new medical device technologies into the Health Board, alongside the ongoing support and maintenance of medical devices throughout their operational lifecycle.
The successful candidate will take the lead in or contribute to projects aimed at introducing innovative technologies within the Board, often involving clinical trials of novel devices, which may not yet have CE/UKCA marking and are in earlier stages of development. Responsibilities will include conducting timely reviews and risk assessments of Research and Development studies that require Clinical Engineering approval prior to initiation. Additionally, the postholder will manage a portfolio of routine medical equipment replacement projects and engage in long-term Clinical Engineering quality enhancement initiatives.
Collaboration with colleagues in Higher Education institutions developing a variety of novel devices will also be a key aspect of this role, as NHS Lothian maintains long-term partnerships in this area.
With a strong emphasis on patient safety, quality, and cost-effectiveness, you will join a motivated multidisciplinary team providing clinical engineering services across the Health Board. The ideal candidate will be self-motivated, possess excellent organizational and interpersonal skills, and demonstrate a flexible and methodical approach. Candidates should either hold HCPC registration as a Clinical Scientist or be on track to complete their training and register within 12 months of starting the position.
As part of the Clinical Engineering/MEM team, your contributions will support various clinical specialties, delivering exceptional healthcare across multiple acute hospital sites and within the local healthcare community. The role will require working at several hospital locations, with the specific base to be agreed upon with the Head of Service. There may also be opportunities for remote work.
NHS Lothian employs approximately 26,000 staff and serves a population of around 910,000 across a diverse region. This area boasts a mix of urban and rural landscapes, offering a unique environment for both work and leisure.
For further details regarding the role, including key responsibilities and required skills/experience, please refer to the job description and person specification. As this is a new position, there will be opportunities to review and refine the job description within the first year of employment.
Applications are welcomed from candidates who may be appointed directly onto Band 7 or onto Band 7 Annex 21, depending on their ability to meet the essential requirements outlined in the person specification.
Please note: We cannot accept late applications, so ensure your application is submitted in a timely manner.
