Position Overview
We are looking to appoint a qualified and experienced Psychological Support Specialist to become a vital member of our Counselling and Psychology Service. This role involves working with patients, their families, and caregivers who are under the care of the Dorset Cancer Centre and/or Forest Holme Hospice. The successful candidate will deliver a secure and effective psychological support service to individuals, couples, and families impacted by a cancer diagnosis or life-limiting illness, including support during bereavement.
Key Responsibilities
The primary responsibilities of this role include:
- Providing a secure and effective psychological support service to individuals, couples, and families affected by cancer.
- Collaborating closely with a multidisciplinary team that includes other Counsellors, a Clinical Psychologist, and a Social Worker.
- Engaging with various professionals to deliver comprehensive nursing, medical, and therapeutic care.
- Demonstrating flexibility and open-mindedness as we enhance our services across the region in response to recent organizational changes.
- Offering support through various modalities, including face-to-face, telephone, and video consultations.
Work Arrangement
This position is primarily full-time; however, we are open to considering part-time applicants and job share arrangements. A minimum commitment of two days per week is required, with opportunities to join the bank for those interested in working less than two days per week.

Qualifications and Experience
Essential Qualifications:
- Completion of a BACP approved diploma in Counselling.
- Accreditation as a Counsellor with BACP or UKCP.
Essential Experience:
- Proven experience as a qualified counsellor in the NHS or a similar environment, working with a diverse range of clients aged 16 and above.
- Demonstrated ability to manage clinical responsibilities for clients' emotional care and treatment while maintaining confidentiality.
- Experience in providing support to individuals experiencing loss and bereavement.
- Experience in facilitating or leading therapeutic groups.
Skills and Knowledge
Essential Skills:
- Highly developed interpersonal skills, including active listening, empathy, and advocacy.
- Strong team collaboration skills and a commitment to working within a multidisciplinary team.
- Ability to manage a personal caseload and time effectively.
- Capability to establish strong therapeutic relationships with service users.
- Proficiency in using IT systems, including Microsoft Office and electronic patient records.
