Position Overview
The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust is inviting applications for the role of Consultant in our dynamic Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery department. The primary responsibility of the successful candidate will be to enhance the provision of an exceptional Upper GI service. The position will primarily be located at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, with responsibilities for non-resident middle grade on-call duties at the Princess Royal Hospital.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Duties
- Perform elective upper gastrointestinal and general surgical procedures under the guidance of a consultant surgeon. Our department specializes in bariatric surgery, benign UGI conditions, and complex abdominal wall reconstruction.
- Manage an unselected emergency general surgery take and related surgical interventions, with consultant supervision.
- Actively participate in the ongoing assessment and care of surgical inpatients, collaborating closely with the broader surgical team.
- Provide surgical middle grade on-call coverage at the Princess Royal Hospital for both adult and pediatric patients, under consultant oversight.
- Develop advanced clinical competencies, particularly in the evaluation and management of critically ill patients.
- Exhibit excellent teamwork capabilities and a professional demeanor conducive to effective collaboration within a multi-disciplinary team.
- Achieve clinical and quality objectives established both nationally and locally in partnership with clinical teams and commissioners.
- Follow patients throughout their clinical journeys in both elective and emergency contexts.
About the Trust
The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust (SaTH) serves as the primary provider of acute hospital services for a population of approximately half a million across Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin, and mid Wales. The Trust's service area encompasses some of the most scenic regions of England and Wales, stretching from the Cambrian Mountains to the outskirts of the Black Country.
Job Structure
A formal job plan will be established between the selected candidate and their Clinical Director along with consultant colleagues within three months of commencement. A full-time job plan is structured around a 10 PA working week, subject to annual review. This plan will delineate the Specialty Doctor's responsibilities, objectives, and commitments for the upcoming year, encompassing all facets of professional practice including clinical duties, education, research, and managerial tasks.
The job plan will typically include:
- 9 Programmed Activities (PAs) dedicated to Direct Clinical Care, which encompasses clinical tasks, clinically related activities, and both predictable and unpredictable emergency work.
- 1 Supporting Professional Activity (SPA) for continuing professional development, audit, teaching, and research.
Adjustments to the allocation of PAs may occur based on service demands or further assessments of the team job plan.
Applicants unable to commit to full-time hours for personal reasons will be considered for the position, with discussions regarding modifications to job content occurring on an individual basis.
